Guildford White wrote: The Don did that with someone seen as an old has-been, Bobby Collins, a centre-half written off by everybody, Jack Charlton, and an incredibly talented group of youngsters, supplemented with key buys (Johnny Giles, Mick Jones, Allan Clarke)

Wilko did it with someone seen as being past his best, Gordon Strachan, some judicious buys of players seen as just past their peak (Mel Sterland, Chris Fairclough, Chris Whyte, Lee Chapman), some prodigious youth (David Batty, Gary Speed) and the tactical buy (Vinnie Jones) who after promotion was replaced by the more creative Gary McAllister.

.
Were the fans at the time excited by the acquisition of these players, or are we seeing them as fantastic with the benefit of hindsight? Perhaps it's far too soon to judge Cellino?

The man in the know seems to think Clarke is the No 1 choice :bear:
I'm going back to 505, I saw them at Sheffield and they were amazing.

I hope so. For my money, he is definitely the best of the currently out-of-work managers, maybe tied with Pulis.

Collins looked good on the Pathé news reels but most fans realised how unreliable those were...

Dear Mr. Cellino,
Re: Head Coach Vacancy @ LUFC.

I would like to throw my hat into the ring.
I am a Leeds 'Pure-blood' & have supported my club for over 50 years.
My mother was a nurse at High Royds Hospital ( psychiatric) & I have a football coaching certificate.
I taught football to children at a primary school level & have my own boots & an LUFC hoodie.
I have no experience in professional football whatsoever, but I do play 'kick-@ss' guitar.
I would be prepared to 'learna di italiano' & believe I am perfect for the job & can start as soon as.
I am sure we could negotiate my terms & condtions over a pint or two.
Please do not hesitate to contact me c/o the MOT forum.
I look forward to your reply.
Yours blah de blah,

Dimbo.
MOT.

It's REDDERS!!!!

Adam Pope ‏@APOPEY 6m
#lufc Massimo Cellino backs Neil Redfearn: "I've decided to leave the team to Neil. At the moment too many coaches call me & I'm confused."
Adam Pope ‏@APOPEY 6m
Cellino added: "I think it's best to keep going with a #lufc man like now, that knows football & makes the team play in a beautiful way."

Isn't an official appointment with Redfearn but don't rule it out. Cellino feels his current options for head coach aren't better than NR

That is a very smart move by Cellino actually. DO IT FOR REDDERS!

I'm happy with the news actually. If there isn't anyone that MC thinks is suitable for the job right now, then Redders is a great choice in the interim. Plus, if things go downhill, it is safe to assume that it will push MC to appoint a new head coach quickly and let Redders resume his role at the academy as opposed to just firing him.

Yeah straightforward really as no point rushing an appointment if the right person isn't available and easy enough to keep Redfearn as caretaker for a while - and if things go well give him the job.

Steve Clarke is the only name being mentioned that I'd be excited about, and Adam Pope has just tweeted that sources close to Clarke have said he doesn't want the Leeds job.
