In 2000 and 2001, Venus won both Wimbledon and the US Open = 4 slams
Then her sister got in the act and won 4 consecutive slams from the French 2002 to the Australian 2003 and Venus was frozen out, except she managed to win 3 more Wimbledon titles in 2005, 2007 and 2008, giving her 7 slams total. Since 2008 she hasn’t won a slam, so I’m rooting for her to do herself proud at the grand old (for top-flight sport) age of 37. I never really liked Serena, although her legacy is immense and awesome, but I always admired Venus’ quiet dignity and honest skillful application. If Serena was playing this tournament she may have beaten Venus, but the point about sport is that, for whatever reason, if you don’t or can’t play in a tournament, then you can’t win, and Venus should take this chance to get herself a sixth and maybe last Wimbledon title. Come on girl, mute the shrieker.
19-year old Roger Federer came to prominence by beating the awesome (at Wimbledon) Pete Sampras in 2001 in the 4th round, but it was 2003 before he won there. He then won it another 4 years straight.
Rafael Nadal was dumped out of the French Open in 2009 by 25th ranked Robin Soderling, which probably facilitated Roger Federer’s single French Open title that year.
Federer has won a record number of slams –
Australian – 5
French – 1
US Open – 5
Wimbledon – 7
He has never won 4 consecutive slams but has acquitted himself with dignity, grace and skill of such high-order as to be thought of as overall sublime.
At the age of 35 he is still producing top class tennis and has won the Australian Open this year.
I, for one, hope he gets Wimbledon again, especially as my adopted Countryman Querrey has already been knocked out after a valiant effort.

Venus looked shattered
Well done to the Spanish lass
Hope all our new Spanish signings are as successful in their Leeds United career
I'm sorry Venus lost but maybe she didn't pace herself like Roger did by not entering the French Open this year. That's probably the smartest thing he did and he's looked fresh this fortnight..
So who are these two fighting??
Two other tennis players mate.
In fairness Hector I apologise. I really should have included a piece about the 2 opponents as well, It would have given it more balance.
If I ever do this again I will do a more complete job.
He is 28 and 6' 6", and has progressed to the Quarter Finals in the last 3 Wimbledons, also the quarter Final at the French Open this year.
He has 1 slam win, the US Open in 2014.
Federer 6-1 Cilic, back to 2008.
Federer's 1 defeat was at the 2014 US Open SF the year Cilic won it.

Federer looks calm & cool as ever, been a stroll in the park so far
Cilic looks rattled & shattered
