The trouble is that if we were looking at signing PJ's mate from Serie A his wages would likely have been a big issue. You have to be realistic about who we can/could sign that is better than we have, wants to come to us and will fit into our wage structure. If you look at our signings we didn't go out and sign players from Serie A or La Liga we mainly signed players from below that level or from lesser leagues.1964white wrote:I'm talking about a European international or close to that level not a young British kid from Everton, or CB's from the likes Bristol City or Brentford. Wasn't we linked with Jansson's mate whom was on the fringe of playing for his country ? can't recall his name !
Not decrying Pennington whatsoever, he could turn out to be a decent player but he is not the finished article yet (as is the case with Shaugnhessy) that's why the Toffees loaned him out to Leeds. That leaves us with Cooper whom is vulnerable without our only class CB alongside him
I'm like a dog with a bone on this subject as I was last season & it cost us then, take the true quality out of the current Leeds team such as Pontus, Saiz & Hernandez & all that leaves us with is a hard-working side who would struggle to make the top ten let alone the play-offs.

We possibly do but don't forget that our first choice centreback (and most comfortable on the ball), PJ, was out and possibly also our second choice in Pennington. We had a bit of a makeshift defence and as such the understanding probably isn't as good as it could have been.whiteswan wrote:If we have the defenders to play the ball out then play the goalie that can also play with his feet. Well we snapped up Jansson when we had no money. We require someone as good & influential as him to make us look rock solid not peeing in the wind hoping for the best. Truth is we never made that crucial signing & the current vulnerability could really comeback & hurt us.weasel wrote:The trouble is that if we were looking at signing PJ's mate from Serie A his wages would likely have been a big issue. We managed to make the Lasogga deal possible once we knew Wood was leaving so why not someone to replace Bartley ?
These stats tells the whole story
12 games played
7 games where Pontus has featured we have conceded 1 goal
5 games without Pontus we have conceded 7 goals
We all can rave about how well Cooper, Shaugnhessy, Ayling & Pennington have performed but the truth is Pontus is different class & if Orta/TC can't see these disturbing facts then we could be in trouble if we lose the great man for a sustained period. Thankfully we are scoring plenty of goals, we generally only need to score one to win games when Jansson plays
