I think it hugely encouraging that the owner of the club is investing on the youth side of things rather than just asset stripping. For Leeds to compete again at the highest level we need to either have a mega rich, Dubai-esque, owner or have a well run club producing our own conveyor belt of talented youngsters that are not only good enough to be in the first team but good enough to improve the first team. Whether these youngsters are picked up from Barcelona's academy or York's matter not one bit as it is incredibly hard to judge which kids will make it and millions of talented kids around the world don't make it. Our youth academy has been in decline for a long time and whilst people will point to Byram, Taylor and Cook the truth is that whilst these have been our best products over recent years none of them are good enough to be regulars at their premiership clubs.
We need to emulate Southampton who restructured everything and got things right with their youth set-up, a set-up that produced Bale, Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain. Those 3 were sold and it then meant that the club became financially stable and then able to keep the next youngsters that came through so that they can supplement expensive signings with youth products.
We need to emulate Arsenal, who under Wenger brought in talented youngsters from all over the world, and some English, and by having them in their youth team allowed them to acclimatise to the country and the Arsenal way of playing so that by time they broke into the first team they could fit in seamlessly (Fabregas being a prime example as a player that they took from Barcelona's academy).
So yes this kid might not make the first team, the vast majority of youngsters don't, but by positively recruiting youngsters that look promising we increase the chances of finding 1 or 2 that might become top class players.
Surely that has got to be positive or maybe we should just get rid of the academy and cut out anything that isn't going to provide immediate results?

Firstly we need to sort our first team squad out if we have any ambitions of making the play-offs, lose on Sunday & Wolves next Tuesday we could be out of the promotion race by the end of November.
Had we gone for quality rather than the scatter gun approach in the summer we probably wouldn't be in the mire we find ourselves in now. Every fan who watches championship football regularly knew what was required, unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case with Orta

Well said Weasel and by recruiting these talented lads has to a positive. Imagine for a little moment ... if not just 1/2 are special players but 6,7 or more make it ,then we must ensure it's at Leeds and well what a coup for the club and supporters.
Re: Ryan Edmondson.........
Can’t sign anyone until January so good to strengthen youth team while the transfer market is shut

Probably go down the same route as Delph, Rose, Lennon, Howson, Byram, Cook & Taylor once they become too big for their boots & they see the £££££££'spaddy parrott wrote:Well said Weasel and by recruiting these talented lads has to a positive. Or if they don't progress as so many fail to do they'll end up in the same direction as Alex Mowatt & many others

Re: Ryan Edmondson.........
No, Leon, it doesn't, but there's nothing can be done to remedy that until January. Investing in the club's future is a different policy to that of strengthening the first team squad, what AR etc are doing in terms of the academy should be applauded, mate. The point weasel makes about us not having a billionaire and needing to augment home grown talent with signings is a valid and good one. We all have an axe to grind with Orta, TC, whomever regarding the lack of strengthening defensively, but this thread isn't the place for it, imo1964white wrote:Still doesn't make up for the lack of top signings required in the summer

Re: Ryan Edmondson.........
Why is it silly. There is nothing silly about building the academy back up, which was sadly neglected under previous ownership. We might not see benefits in the first team from the academy in the immediate future, but the recruitment plus the planned upgrade to a Class 1 Academy should be applauded not ridiculed, and will ultimately benefit the club in the future.1964white wrote:Who the heck is this kid ?

Re: Ryan Edmondson.........
I suppose that's why it is rather vital to be promoted at that juncture and have as many as possible on the squad we know and believe if there good enough they'll be old enough.
Re: Ryan Edmondson.........
We'll wait & see what happens in the future
We need to put our full concentration/resources getting back into the premiership because if any of the kids are decent we haven't a hope of retaining their services.
If Vieira keeps up his progress at this level he'll be the next one to leave LUFC
Whilst on the subject of our best players if we don't pull our socks up & make a concerted effort to challenge for promotion, Saiz won't be at ER next season
Once again LUFC & especially the fans will miss out, it's like an ever revolving nightmare

Re: Ryan Edmondson.........
You are right it doesn't but that doesn't make it a negative. This club has got to evolve on a lot of different levels, the first team, the youth set-up, the commercialism, world wide marketing, training facilities etc etc. Whilst the first team being successful is what everyone wants to see the club needs to focus on both short term and long term solutions.1964white wrote:Still doesn't make up for the lack of top signings required in the summer
I feel the club to some degree acted sensibly in the summer by not spending huge amounts. We could easily have splashed the cash on the proven players and then been left in a financial hole if we didn't get promoted straightaway. I feel they erred on the side of caution, and AR did say it was his plan to be promoted within 2 years, and cast the net on a lot of targets with presumably the idea being that if we didn't get promoted this year we would hopefully be in a stronger position next year with hopefully players like Alioski for exampe fully acclimatised to the championship and we then sign 2 or 3 players of the more proven kind to make us stronger. Now whilst we have seemingly tried this before but then ended up simply replacing a load of dead wood each summer the hope is that we can break that cycle and instead of having 1 good player we have 7 or 8 and they are all under lengthy contracts so don't have to be sold.
