RIP Dennis Cockerham (Laughing Leeds Fan)

Post by becchio bear »

The following is a message from Twiggs sent to me via facebook:-

To all my LUFC friends on here...
It grieves me to pass on the news that my good friend Dennis Cockerham - The Laughing Leeds Fan passed away yesterday.
He had fought so bravely against the alzheimers that had crippled and frustrated him for the past years.
I loved and respected him, not just for being a Leeds fan, but for who he was - a kind and loving guy - a caring person in the era of internet anonymity.
He helped me plant a White Rose on my niece Leanne's grave and held me as I cried, that time.
When I took my Danish stepson to Elland Road for his first game, Dennis asked him his name. Then led 40 or so Leeds fans outside the Peacock in a chant of "One Danish Frederik - there's only one Danish Frederik" :) My lad was SO proud!

I "met" Dennis on the old Square Ball forum and when I formed MOTForum, Dennis was one of the original members - we had some excellent on line chats (Y)
He was also active on the waccoe messageboard.....

His family have asked me to pass on this sad news to the LUFC community. I'm not on any messageboards any more, so I'm passing this on.....

:bear:
I'm going back to 505, I saw them at Sheffield and they were amazing.

Was just about to post too. Sad to hear of Dennis' passing, one of the original MOTers and a toughly nice guy. He has battled alzheimers in recent years but by he will live on in his words and out memories of them;
Twas a long sunny summer that kept us apart
But then came the sight me lads
That lightened my heart
For down in the valley boys
My dreams all came true
There's an army of Leeds United fans dressed
In yellow white and blue

And they all sang of fortress Elland road
As they walked in the sun
And they talked of the victories
in the season to come
So if you need lifting boys
Then here's what to do
You should get yourselves to Elland road
Dressed in the yellow white and blue.

Get yourselves to Elland Road dressed
In the yellow white and blue
You will know from our history
That we're not the kind
To suffer in silence when we fall behind
We will hoist up the flag me boys
With the rest of the crew
An ocean of colour waving
In the yellow white and blue

And we'll all sing at Fortress Elland Road
in the warm summer sun
And we'll fight for the victories
In the season to come
So hoist up the flag me boys
With the rest of the crew
An ocean of colour waving
In the yellow white and blue

An ocean of colour waving
In the yellow white and blue
And when the game's over
And we go our own ways
We'll march home with pride me lads
Neath the suns fading rays
Till it's time for some fish and chips
Then it's out for a brew
And we'll sing songs of our heros
In the yellow white and blue

And we'll all sing of Fortress Elland Road
As we drink in 'The Sun'
And we'll talk of the victories
In the season to come
Yes we'll call for some fish and chips
Then it's out for a brew
And we'll sing songs of our heros
In the yellow white and blue
Sing songs of our heros
In the yellow white and blue

Ask who are the greatest football fans
And the world will proclaim
Each valley and mountain
Will echo our name
The answer will reach us all
in words clear and true
We all love the Yorkshire infantry
in the yellow white and blue

And we all sing of Fortress Elland Road
We're the worlds number one
And we talk of the victories
In the season to come
And the answer will reach us all
In words clear and true
We all love the Yorkshire infantry
In the yellow white and blue

We are the Yorkshire infantry
In the yellow white and blue
And there's nothing quite like us
On this mother earth
We are second to nobody
Assured of our worth
So let them merge Arsenal
Liverpool and Man U
They trouble not the infantry
In the yellow white and blue

And we all sang of Fortress Elland Road
As we walked in the sun
And we talked of the victories
In the season to come
So let them merge Arsenal
Liverpool and Man U
They trouble not the infantry
In the yellow white and blue
No threat to the infantry
In the yellow white and blue

Very sad news

I lost my uncle to Alzheimer's just before Christmas

I also visit a local nursing home every week where there are so many residents with the dreaded Alzheimer's & Parkinson's diseases, have befriended several of these unfortunate people over the last couple of years

RIP Dennis
