The LUFC Breakfast Debate (Wed 11th July)

Good Morning Everyone

Betting has been suspended on Jordan Hugill to join Leeds.

The 26yo hitman will pen a one year loan deal with the Whites as early as today.

Similarly, Norwich have snapped up Jordan Rhodes, also on a season long loan.

Who has the better deal?

Leeds were charged more for policing than all London clubs combined last season.

It cost West Yorkshire Police (WYP) £815,087 to pay for officers at Leeds United matches in 2017/18, exclusive figures reveal.

The club have been invoiced for £572,779 of that total - 70 per cent.

However, London’s biggest clubs were charged just a fraction of that cost.

Thoughts?

Birmingham are about to undergo a transfer embargo. I wonder whether they'll have a sudden change of heart over Stockdale?

The England game will be shown on the big screen at Billy's bar this evening.

Who's going?

Rhodes seems to be on the decline given his limited playing time with recent clubs - if he could get his mojo back then he is a very good player at this level. Hugill seemed to be on the rise but then saw his career stall after moving to the prem and not playing - like so many other players. Hugill seems to be the sort of target man that Bielsa apparently likes so might be a better fit and you would think he still has the desire to prove himself.

Morning Matt,

I'm going to assume that Bielsa has had input into this move, so lets see what happens. As someone said the other day, a fit and motivated Hugill could be our new Chris Wood. The Rhodes of a few years ago was a proper handful at this level, but he does seem to have lost his way.

Even the police hate Leeds!!! ;-)

Do we actually need Stockdale if the Blackman deal is done? BPF and him vying for the number 1 jersey is surely enough? I'd rather any monies set aside for Stockdale were ploughed into a bit of quality elsewhere. At centre half, for example.

I'm from Norn Iron, mate, I'll not be there!

Morning lads

I’d be happy with hugill - I wanted us to go for him before he moved to the prem. he’s great at this level and after not playing much last season I can see him being hungry and up for it.

Suppose the police figure have to take into context our much higher attendances and distance of transport links to the ground, so obviously the amount of staff and distance to cover is a lot higher.

I’d much prefer Blackman over stockdale tbh. As much as the romanticism of ‘He’s a Leeds fan’ is - I’d rather take the punt on the big man - especially as how bad we were at set pieces last season

Morning Weasel, so you're saying that given the choice between Rhodes and Hugill, you'd go Hugill?

Morning 1304, I don't know too much about Blackman, though other football fans rave about him so would be happy to see him this season..

I think we'll see a signing today...

Morning Brader, great point about set pieces. I'd also like us to sign a free kick specialist. Could be worth an extra 15-20 goals a season with proper deliveries...

It is a tricky as no guarantees with either of them in terms of being a success so based solely on their career paths at present (Rhodes seemingly on the decline and Hugill on the rise) then I would plump for Hugill although we all know how capable Rhodes is of scoring goals at this level.

Baker seems to be capable of taking a good free kick although I don't know enough about him to know whether he is as good at setting up chances from set pieces as he is at scoring from them.

I can't find any story about us actually signing Blackman

Good morning Matt & All

Unsure about Hugill though he could be the answer to our striker problem. Rhodes is an expensive flop whom is best left alone right now

Not bothered about Stockdale & the wage demands that comes with him. We already have a decent keeper in Peacock-Farrell who has cost us next to nothing

Police costs are always expensive. If football fans (especially Leeds) behaved humanly & sportingly we wouldn't have these unnecessary high overheads, once again a society problem, we bring it on ourselves. It's a tribal aspect with football fans.

I'll be watching the England game at home

How many of Pablo's nine goals were scored from free-kicks last season ?

I recall a couple of penalties & the sublime curling free-kick at Burton

West Brom are preparing a 10m bid for Pontus Jansson.

They have just secured Kyle Bartley for 3.5m, and are keen to team him up with Jansson again....

We have 20M in the kitty we can't spend it seems. Also losing PJ would mean we'd have no starting defenders for this system. Would probably also piss off Biesla

I'd love to hear Bielsa's views on Pontus - he seems to have gone from a firm fan favourite to a liability in the eyes of some fans, and I can't help but put some of the blame on the coaching. A good player doesn't go bad overnight without some external stuff - same thing apparently with Berardi. Both players got top notch reviews under Monk's defensive mindset, so could it not be the system TC was trying to implement? Bielsa is probably going to use a similar system to TC so they may not fit with that either. :dun:

I don't think PJ is a libero but he'd be one of the better stoppers in the Championship, if not the best. We of course don't really know how the system MB implements will fit in terms of squad. I can say this when new American football coaches implement their scheme on an existing roster built to play a different scheme it invariably always goes wrong. Even the simple power to zone blocking turned a dominant Raider O line into one of the leagues worst over night. Shifting players to fit a 3-4 D after running 4-3 D often goes awry too. Takes a year or two and often means star players moving on

You are joking Bert

Pontus is still a top defender, our only player good enough to play for his country in the current World Cup. He is the last player who should be moving on, yes things didn't pan out for him last season but are you surprised when he was paired up with a mix of three turkey's alongside him in Pennington, Cooper & Shaughnessy plus the flapping Felix behind him between the sticks.

If Pontus is paired up with Bartley at WBA go place a stash of money on the baggies for promotion.

Whilst you are down at the bookie's have a wad on Leeds to be relegated too :(
