First Car

Post by gessa » Tue Sep 18, 2018 5:43 pm

Mine was a 1970 Red mk1 Ford Escort 1300E.

Wish I still had it, paid £300 for it, fetching upwards of £6000 now.

Ditto, except mine was pale blue. Paid £250 for it. Three months later it was stolen and wrapped around a lamp post. Got £600 off of the insurance. Invested in a beautiful white Triumph 1500 TC, which took me all around Europe.

Bronze Mk2 Escort bought off a mate for a couple of hundred in 82, radio set on fire as I took it for an MOT  following week passed the MOT minus the radio and still smelling of smoke

Ford Zephyr IV mark 3, 1703cc - ex-army, 75 quid. Bench seat, column change, brilliant. Lots of things I didn't know when I bought it but it turned out I got one of the few examples of a column change that was absolutely tight - it was a joy to drive and we had great fun, but there was a reason for the price.
Problem was the rust in the end - it looked alright but the sub-frame was slowly rusting and I had to trade it
First car but never even thought to take a picture of it.

When I was at school, I had a few weeks off to go to work with my brother, his mate had a Zephyr, bloody lovely it was, leather seats were just top quality.

Also a Mini for me Norfolk.

Couldn't tell you what model or engine size though. All I remember is that it was that horrible non-descript sandy brown colour and leaked like a sieve. I had to sell it within 6 months as my student over-draft in my final year was getting bigger than my bank manager was willing to allow.

Then I'm the second :)
Just a regular mini, regustered 1960 something (this was in 1978). A mate of me Dad's got this rusty old green mini with holes all over. He filled and then sprayed it the colour I wanted.....bright yellow. It was the love of my life, I spent a fortune on black go faster stripes, furry yellow and black seat covers, fitted new carpets myself. It had a bent gearstick that wouldn't go into first, and a starter button on the floor. Headlights were dipped by a foot pedal....and if anyone has driven up Garrowby Hill in Yorkshire (1 in 6), you will understand why I had to stop in the layby half way up, gather myself ( and the mini) and set off again with one big push. Happy days :)

Mine had the front bench seat with the column change and the handbrake on the right, so I could comfortably get 6 in on occasion, but with the smaller engine I had to change gear a lot. The Zephyr VI was the bees knees overall with a 2.5-litre engine, but I loved my IV to bits - space, comfort, cheap class.
