Transfer Strategy

Post by Cjay »

Quite simple really.

Does Radz have to change?

He has been very open about his desire for Leeds to be self sustaining, sell to buy policy.

Its not something i like tbh i find it extremely frustrating, although he has reinvested the money received there is an unwillingness to go the extra mile.

When he arrived he said he admired the Brighton model, unfortunately the Brighton model is entirely sugar daddy funded and not the "cheap and sustainable" model Radz seems to prefer.

I dont think Radz has helped himself, i always find myself going back to his Wolves rant and thinking "well where are these connections".

For me this summer is make or break for Radz, i make no secret of the fact i am furious with him over January and imo i dont buy the "only player Bielsa wanted was James" i really dont.

Bielsa called for "players better then he had" he didnt want Vieira sold he didnt want Saiz to go and he didnt want Baker to go. I'm sure if Radz had offered Bielsa players better then those he lost Bielsa wouldn't have said "no".

I fimly believe we took the cheap option in January and risked it all on getting James cheap, we failed and a lot of our rivals point to January as a big part of what went wrong, imo its naive to disagree.

But its done now, all i hope is lessons have been learned.

What concerns me is i think Bielsa has been very understanding and patient. I think because he gave the club his word and genuinely appreciated the opportunity he accepted what happened and did his best to fix it.

But MB will be as hurt as anyone, he has basically said the players made up for a lack of quality with effort (words to that effect ).

If he is to stay he will be fully aware what is required and who he wants to stay.

And its this that worries me, summer 2nd season at Bilbao he was extremely frustrated when Javi Martinez was allowed to leave.

He was already annoyed at Marseille over the summer transfers the summer he arrived 2014, they had signed players he didnt really want and failed to sign players he identified and sold a player against his wishes. MB publicly criticsed the President of the club over this (something he hasnt Radz tbf).

This anger was increased when players he identified earlier in the season as transfer targets for the summer 2015 window including Kante were not signed in the summer and key players like Andre Ayew, Florian Thauvin, Gianni Imbula and Dimitri Payet were sold against his wishes.

The difference imo is he felt the Marseille owner lied to him, i imagine Radz was very open with Bielsa when he appointed him and that is probably why MB hasnt been vocal about transfers. MB is an honourable man and i think if you are honest with him he will be quite flexible.

However, this summer imo would be different, like Marseille, if Radz tries to sell off key players against MBs wishes then simply i think MB will walk.

And that is an issue because that is exactly what Radz will do if previous windows are any indication, that is exactly his business model, sell to buy.

As MB said "i will listen to the clubs proposal".

If Radz goes against his plan and allows the club to keep key players and also offers MB proper funding to sign players i would think MB will have already identified then i am hopeful MB would stay.

I dont think MB would be as understanding and willing to accept not getting his first choice targets again and i dont think he would be as accepting of losing key players as he was before.

It would take a total swerve in strategy though and i dont know if Radz has the nerve or indeed the funding.

Really hoped that Bielsa would signal a change of transfer policy, it didnt, we tried cheap and cheerful and unfortunately it wasn't quite enough, isnt it time to try a different approach?

I'm not suggesting we go mad, but with FFP resetting that pressure is lifted, imo we could go for it once properly, look to sign the absolute best players we can and really go for it.

If it goes wrong and we fail then we will have to cut costs, but next season financially is a bit of a free hit and there will be clubs in this league that really do go for it, i hope we arent left behind.

So, will Radz change his strategy?

Indeed should he?

And if he wont will Bielsa stay?
Signed

Che Adams for whatever it costs, Harrison off MC if we can con them into around 1-2, he's getting there and he has class in spades, the pace and physicality of the Champ did for him. Left Winger and if there's any left a quality central defender or DMF.

I think Chelsea owe us for charging us for Baker and then us rehabilitating Brown for them...lets get him back too. Fit he looks a real prospect and he should be close to fit for the start of next season

I think we'll make 3/4 signings, with the u23s stepping up in most places. Depending on how much we receive, I expect one big player to go, maybe 2, but no more. A couple of loans from abroad I imagine, plus a signing from South America and maybe a free transfer. Not expecting massive amounts, we don't need to, just need more luck with injuries too.

ideal scenario would be to keep mostly what we already have ( apart from kiko, bamford and beradi ) and
add a quality cb with a bit of pace and a big gob , quality forward gayle / adams , someone to partly replace hernandez and a tricky winger with pace to burn with precision crosses .
realistically ............

I think once again we will be in a much stronger position than our rivals when it comes to finances. Boro scaling back, Stoke will lose players and cut costs as PP coming down, West Brom will have to cut too, Derby/Villa up sht creek, Wendies under ffp investigation, Fulham massive wage bill and mercenaries on books. I think only Forest, Cardiff and Town will have significant funds to spend.

Wondering if James Milner will be interested in coming across. Papers suggest he is still wanted at Liverpool though.

For me he would be a good player to us as a utility player and also allow Pablo to miss a few games

Radz has already agreed to do another equity release, and the 49ers are desperately awaiting their chance to grab it. That should bring £12- 15 million into the transfer budget. We should have some coming from Saiz (how much, who knows), and the Turks are paying £2M for Ekuban, so that should get us close to £20M without the sale of any key players. Add in any of the loanees who get picked up, and their wages and we should have a healthy transfer pot without Radz going against his principles.

The only worry is that players we would like to get are being scrutinised by lower Prem teams. Palace have apparently bid £25M for Maupay. That is something we can't compete with.

If the wendies need to sell for ffp, Forestieri would be a good signing. He loves Bielsa and would add what we're missing.

I think Westwood and Lee are ooc too there, could be decent options.

Good. I don't want that dickhead anywhere near our shirt. Hope he's a massive flop in the PL.

No chance on Adams imo, Birmingham will want £20mil, so unless Radz is willing to properly splash the cas cant see it. Harrison would be about £8mil imo, City will want a decent profit and he is on £50k a week.

Interestingly i watched the Pompey game yesterday, Matt Clarke is quality as a left sided cb.

Tbf how much of that 49ers money actually went into the budget last season? Strongly suspect it was used to cover losses and what not because we definitely didnt spend it all on transfers as we were told, same as the season ticket money, we were lied to last summer whats to stop them doing that again? They are very creative with wording this board.

In theory if Radz matches the 49ers investment, they both put £10mil into the pot, then any cash we raise is a bonus but that didnt happen last season, will it this?

Hard to know how much went into the transfer budget. We could have got a cheaper manager and had more for transfers, MB and his entourage cost £3m to £4m and that has to come out from somewhere. We also sold Vieira who was probably on low wages and then bought Bamford and Douglas who were both likely on much higher wages. That £10m gets swallowed up very quickly. For all we got Kiko on a free those £50k p/w wages add up to £1m for 20 weeks.

All a fine balancing act but hopefully there will be enough money to get the players Bielsa wants.

I dont trust the board mate, Kinnear told us about exciting summers and advanced stages for transfers and it all turned out to be nonsense.

I hope they have learned lessons but as i say, clever wording was key for them last season.

If you say things will go entirely into improving the playing squad then thats what should happen, that doesnt include coaching budgets.

“One hundred per cent of the money generated from season ticket sales is put back into the first team in the form of transfer fees or salaries.

Absolutely! That was core to the deal. When asked by Jim White if the 49ers money would all go into the playing squad.

If you make that promise then thats what should happen and I'm absolutely certain it didnt.
