Whites Versus Tykes Preview

Post by YorkshireSquare »

Leeds United and Barnsley have had plenty of off the pitch publicity this week with the Telegraph undercover investigation, the Tykes assistant manager Tommy Wright following England manger Big Sam in getting the chop. But this weekend hostilities between the two clubs will resume on the pitch after Barnsley’s two seasons in League One when the teams meet at Elland Road on Saturday. Leeds are slight favourites with the bookmakers*, check out the Free Bets at Bethut and back them this weekend.

Leeds have had a chequered history against Barnsley since the teams started competing regularly in the Championship with 5 losses, 3 draws and 2 wins in the last ten years. All time results since the first game in 1921 show 22 victories for Leeds, 19 for Barnsley and 17 matches drawn. Leeds do have the upper hand over the last two matches though with a draw at home and a win away at Oakwell last time the teams met.

Garry Monks team have had a slow start to the season but results have picked up recently with three wins and a loss out of the last four games. Barnsley however have gone the other way, after a bright start have faded with a draw and two losses in the last three, slipping down to tenth from the promotion places. Although Leeds lost their last game to Bristol it was a positive performance and momentum will feel very much with the West Yorkshire side.

Barnsley have some injury concerns with right back Saidy Janko and winger Ryan Williams out of contention for the match. Former Leeds player Aidy White is also a doubt and will be assessed ahead of the game. Leeds will be missing Liam Bridcutt who is out for another eight weeks with a broken foot. Ronaldo Vieira is expected to be fit but we are still waiting for new on Pontus Jansson who was subbed at half time in the Bristol game with a hamstring strain.

A couple of weeks ago the favoured result may have been a Barnsley win but with the shift in results and momentum a result for Leeds could well be on the cards. Barnsley dressing room will also have been disrupted with the suspension and sacking of assistant Tommy Wright. The Telegraph’s revelations should not have too much of an impact on Leeds, we know Cellino is a bid dodgy, were used to it.

*At time of writing Leeds are 6/5 for the win, Barnsley are 27/10 for the win and the draw is 5/2.
