John in Louisiana wrote:Don't know that he was the best player of all time, but my favorite player ever (apart from Bremner, of course) was Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira. A positively brilliant attacking midfielder; his passing and vision on the field were unrivaled. He could read and dominate a game from the midfield as well as Zidane at his best.

Don't penalize Pele because the players around him were great. Pele was amazing. He revolutionized the game.
Socrates and the '82 Brazilian side of Zico , Eder and Falcao . What a team they were

Messi by some distance
54 goals, 41 goals, 58 goals, 41 goals, 60 goals, 73 goals, 53 goals, 47 goals his goalreturn season by season for the last 8 years, highly highly doubt football will see another player like Lionel. It's not just his consistency it is the moments he has created in the big games.

If you are in any doubt about Messi being the greatest of all time watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-u6Ya3Xy48

I would agree that Messi is the best.
But for me it's about an emotional connection too.
That's why Maradonna would never be in my list.

My favourite though has to be Cruyff. Just something about his lanky style. His elegance and sublime skill.

Watching the World Cup on a small black and white telly....

Rep,Rensenbrink, Kroll, Haan, Neeskens... still remember them.

Cruyff just looked so effortless, the most graceful player ever to have lived. I also remember the above names, we used them in the playgound after school..I was always Johan Neeskens (12 in 74)...

The greatest team was the 70 Brazil team, if I had to form a GOAT team that Brazil team would have at least 5 players in the first 11

Pelé, Jairzinho, Carlos Alberto, Rivelino and Gérson for sure then maybe Tostao would have to be considered.

Best British would have to include Bremner, Best and King Kenny, I'd have to think about Johnny Haynes too who was a friend and played with my uncle if only in training.

This isn't about scoring goals, it's about being a leader. The technical ability to put the ball in the net does not make a player wonderful and the best in the world.
Messi is perhaps the greatest goalscorer ever, but he cannot control the game, i.e. motivate/exhort his teammates to win the game. The greatest footballers had that extra quality, the ability to win a game, to lead by example. There is perhaps no better example of a prolific goal scorer than Messi, but that doesn't make him the best footballer ever. This is why I cannot see him in that role - and also why he does not succeed with Argentina.
This is why I insist on there being an international component to "The best footballer" - it is the icing on the cake, but it's the icing on the cake which makes them great. Messi could probably play for 10 more years, but he will likely never win, or inspire his teammates to win, a World Cup, and that is the ultimate achievement. Pele and Maradona did that. Let’s see Messi do that!

I'll even pay your train fare and entry to the ground, you and Sandra.
All she has to do is be the queen she no doubt is, for putting up with you for years.
All you have to do is genuflect, to Sandra, not me.

On which thread did she post, or are you talking about an application for a username?
This is serious liggy - hell you could be facing conjugal stuff, or not, if you get my drift.
I'd love to see her post on here.
Seriously, pm Leon (1964white) if there's a communication problem. I'm certain he'll facilitate it.
Love to Sandra - tell her we can't wait to hear from her, and I'm quite sure nobody will embarrass her.

Or more likely what Weasel said on page 1.......Messi never done it in WC - to be greatest of all time I think you have to have the big one on your CV.
