Will Argentina qualify for World Cup 2018
ARGENTINA are very much in the last chance saloon as they travel to Quito to take on Ecuador in their final World Cup qualifier.
Jorge Sampaoli's side have now gone five competitive matches without any of their players scoring from open play
Argentina are in 6th in the South American qualifying table - a position that would leave them sitting at home during next summer's World Cup.
But there is a silver lining, which is that fifth placed Peru and fourth placed Colombia play each other in Lima on the final day.
The Peruvians are ahead of Argentina on goals scored, while the Colombians are a point ahead of Jorge Sampaoli's men
Whether they would get through automatically depends on other results
For Argentina to be able to book their flights to Russia, they would need a victory coupled with EITHER a draw between Peru and Colombia OR Chile failing to win in Brazil.
Can Argentina qualify with a draw?
If Argentina draw, things get even more complicated.
They would need Colombia to beat Peru or Peru to beat Colombia by two clear goals, coupled with either Chile losing by two clear goals against Brazil or Paraguay failing to win at home to Venezuela.
If the match between Peru and Colombia ended in a draw, the only way a point would qualify Argentina is if Chile lost by two clear goals in Brazil and Paraguay failed to beat Venezuela.
A draw in Ecuador would be enough for the play-offs assuming Peru vs Colombia finished in any other result than a draw or a one-goal Peruvian win, and either Chile lost by two clear goals in Brazil or Paraguay failed to beat Venezuela.
If Peru vs Colombia did end in either a draw or one-goal win for the home side, Argentina would be eliminated unless Chile lost by two clear goals in Brazil and Paraguay failed to beat Venezuela.

The other problem for the Argies is Sergio Aguero is out with an injury
If Messi is supposedly the greatest player in the world surely he should single-handedly see Argentina through the qualifying rounds to the real stuff

It's hard to imagine a World Cup finals without Argentina.
The Dutch look like they will almost certainly miss out, but Argentina not making it would be a bigger shock.

Yes it would be a massive shock if Argentina failed to qualify for the WC tournament Harry

The Dutch have fallen away of late.1964white wrote:Holland seem to have been on a downward spiral over the decades

But the dilemma facing them, Argentina (and similar status nations) is the driving force behind the increase in the number of World Cup finalists to 48. To make sure that they never miss out.

Didn't appear that comfortable after the first minute when the Argies went one down
I'm glad the the renown teams such as Argentina & Holland made it the finals. Football fans want to see the big nations picking their wits against each other
If the Argies had of failed we could have questioned Messi's status of being the best footballer of all-time, he showed his class last night !

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Messi single-handedly dragged Argentina back from the brink. There's a fag paper between him and Ronaldo for who is the best (currently), but I come down on the side of Lionel simply because he isn't a prancing ponce who would give himself one if he could!!!

Well Messi pulled the Argentinian's out of the fire. An absolute superstar.

:scarf2: When they needed him he saved them :scarf2:
Still the best player of all time for me
Wont all agree on that, but think we can all agree the World Cup needs Lionel Messi

He needs a really good World Cup now to be considered in that bracket.......otherwise best I've seen would have to stay with that other unspeakable ArgieCjay wrote::scarf2: When they needed him he saved them :scarf2:

Superb hat-trick from Messi, makes you wonder how much the Argies would miss his silky attacking play should he incur an injury in the finals
Looked an exhilarating game from the short highlights I saw
Are you watching England
Ecuador would have been too good for our lot

People keep saying "Maradona played in a poor Argies side"
Maybe this qualifying shows actually, so does Messi?

the argies may have a few big names, but dont think there that good a side, similar to Maradonas time maybe, take Messi out of it then they struggle.
Edit . . England are just depressing
