Excellent piece of journalism...but then I wonder....that old adage : is there is no such thing as bad publicity ?
Would there have been an outcry if they had put a white child in the hoodie...and why then did they put a black child in it ?
What you think ?

Re: O/T Monkey Hoodie H & M Advert
Obviously the intent wasn’t to be racist. I mean I call my little boy monkey and could probably see him wearing that hoody. But then I’m speaking from a position of white privilege and the term doesn’t come loaded with a background of racist abuse for me. It’s sad that we should have to consider such things, but we do and it was very naïve of H&M not to spot the potential to upset and offend at various stages of the process.

Similarly refer to our Ruby as 'my little monkey', but for all the reasons Adam points out, H&M have scored a bit of an own goal here. Intent, or lack thereof, is one thing, but it's all about perception, and someone in their marketing dept is going to be looking for a new job, I suspect

Agreed Nick and Adam
Sometimes you wonder what the f**k were they thinking ??
Or were "clever" marketing at their work?...I hope not...but if not...is that not even worse ??
I think or hope it's just crass stupidity.
I asked Danny,my 13yo, what his thoughts were on this...he couldn't believe it.
He asked...."Why not have a white boy in the advert? Even I know that monkey and black boy should not be put together...if the boy was white there would be no problem. And even if they had the black boy...could it not even have been coolest lion or tiger in the jungle ?"
That's my wee boy talking....this is beginning to stink of marketing at all costs....H & M is in the headlines....but it's publicity.
Bit like that YouTuber who filmed the body of a suicide victim....made a "mistake"...pretended to apologise...then raked up a huge amount of YouTube views...and in turn, cash.
'Tis a twisted world.

I think it's because monkeys are highly intelligent with complex social structures.

Maybe H & M should hire a troop of monkeys as their next senior management team.faaip wrote:I think it's because monkeys are highly intelligent with complex social structures.

Maybe, I'm not taking offence at the advert so doesn't concern me

Agreed don't see why the uproar. Similar to events earlier in the week I live my life by a very simple rule. Never get offended on someone else's behalf.
I think as a society now we find a reason to find offence in anything.
I think it was an oversight on their behalf nothing more nothing less. The family of the child clearly agreed with it so where's the issue?

As is your right too...but if others find offence, that is their right too.
That is why we have reasoned discussion.
Simply because the child's family didn't find it offensive is not a get out clause.
Are we now to be censored in what we find offensive?

Not saying we should be censored on what should be offended but I personally am getting tired of people being in uproar.Ronan wrote:As is your right too...but if others find offence, that is their right too.

I'm quite a liberal guy l each to their own but people are getting far too precious in modern society.

Fair enough.....it's finding that balancing act of tolerance....there will always be offence in this world...it's being able to accommodate each other.herefordbornleedsboy wrote:Not saying we should be censored on what should be offended but I personally am getting tired of people being in uproar.

Technically you getting tired of people being in uproar is you being offended and me offended at you...it's a vicious circle.
The tightrope of life.
Back on topic....i don't think it was racism...i think it was stupidity

I think it was deliberate marketing...
How many more people now know who H&M are?
