The LUFC Breakfast Debate (Mon 17th Sept)

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning Everyone

Leeds survived an injury time onslaught including former Elland Road youngster Tom Elliott hitting the woodwork during the closing moments at the New Den

In the end the spoils were shared. Were we good value for our draw?

Was this a fixture that we would have lost last season?

Was it the right decision to play Alioski? Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan claimed if the Macedonian 'had a brain, he could be a World beater'.

Thoughts?

How much of a loss was the absence of Roofe and Hernandez?

Who would have been the most effective?

Without these two players, are we going to struggle?

Fans opinions were split on who Leeds best player was!

Jansson was a rock in defence, chalking up 17 clearances, and winning every header even though his distribution further up the field was poor.

Whilst Spanish wizard Saiz's surging runs, and pin point accurancy passing made him a hit with the ER faithful.

Thoughts?

My thoughts are , a decent point indeed and of course the guile and flair are missing up top. Interestingly about Janson passing is at the end of the day he's only a centre half and needs to concentrate on that . On the ball is one thing but give it a quicker to someone with the talent and yes a touch or two less for me would suffice thank you very much.

Yes we deserved our draw

Yes

Yes as Bielsa didn't have too many options & to be fair Alioski had done quite well this season, unfortunately when we needed him to stand up to the plate especially with Roofe & Pablo injured he went missing. How many more times is he needlessly gonna get caught offside this season, he needs to be a bit more clever in timing his runs!

Massive!

Yes

Lets say I wouldn't expect anymore Stoke/Derby/Norwich type bashings without them

Jansson & Cooper were like rocks at the back for us & they needed to be. Some really unfair criticism aimed at Pontus especially from social media, without him we'd have lost more headers against their big unit as they continually bombarded us with crosses & long throw-ins.
Pontus & Saiz joint MOTM for me with Cooper not far behind

Magnificent & a joy to watch. Some sublime passes, created the majority of our chances, those around him wasn't always on the same wavelength!

Of course it was a good point to snatch especially at the Den. Obviously Roofe and Pablo will be missed and I am not inspired by Tyler Roberts, I would rather get one of the young lads in, probably Clarke....perfect game on Tuesday to give him a start.

Pontus had a good old fashioned centre half type of game imo and shouldnt be berated because he 'took too many touches' etc, you cannot always play it out from the back and we will certainly fall foul of that tactic over the season.

Also I think we sometimes put pressure on ourselves with where we clear the ball, ie on Saturday against a long throw specialist we should have been trying to clear to touch further up the pitch instead of around the goal area. I suppose under pressure the defender doesn't think that clearly.

Saiz, yes great at driving forward and some subtle skills but he needs to stop running into brick walls and start releasing the ball earlier.

A point at Millwall, especially given the injuries, was a good point and well deserved from what I have read. We'd certainly have lost that game last season.

Roofe and, especially, Hernandez a loss, others need to step up. Millwall was possibly not the game to bed in replacements, but at least Roberts got himself into scoring positions. Jansson, Cooper and Saiz all did well on Saturday but, collectively, we weren't at our best. Makes the point earned an even better one. Top of the league, only unbeaten team after a tough opening 7 games, even the most optimistic of fans would have scoffed at the idea of that when the season started. If we can carry on in a similar vein until we get our injuries cleared up (not so much Bamford, who was playing a bit part), we'll be in good shape.

Millwall boss Harris: Leeds United’s celebrations were a disgrace

Millwall manager Neil Harris had no opportunity for a traditional post-match drink with Marcelo Bielsa on Saturday – but has labelled the actions of some of Leeds United’s backroom staff to their late equaliser “a disgrace”.

The Lions chief shook hands with the Argentina-born boss at the full-time whistle but then appeared set to confront someone in the away technical area before being led away.

Bielsa had stormed into Millwall’s section when they were slow to give the ball back for a throw in. But after Jack Harrison’s goal the Leeds celebrations were directed at Harris and his coaching staff.

Bielsa apologised for his behaviour in his post-match press conference.

Asked if he had a drink with the Leeds manager, Harris said: “No. I briefly had a five minute catch-up when I went pitchside to do press. We discussed the heated exchange at the end of the game.

“I think Marcelo has already apologised in the press for his bench. And I’ve already stated that my staff could’ve given the ball back slightly quicker, make it more accessible to get the ball.

“But their reaction to the goal is completely over the top and a disgrace in English football.”

Jed Wallace had put Millwall into the lead and the Lions went close on a couple of frenetic goalmouth scraps as well as Tom Elliott’s header hitting the post.

“I felt at the time that their goal was a little bit unjust and looking back it was completely against the run of play,” said Harris. “We were controlling the game and never looked in any danger. The goal is out of nothing – a 25-yard shot into the bottom corner.

“On another day it would hit any of the five blue shirts in front of him who are trying to get out to block him. We have to take that on the chin. We showed great character to almost win the game afterwards – instead of going into our shell.

“Tom’s header hits the post, Tom Bradshaw has a shot blocked on the line and Jake Cooper’s header is blocked on the line. Jed puts one wide right before the final whistle. When these things go for you then you win the game.

“It is not going for us but our performance as a whole was outstanding.

“Our fanbase played a part, really getting behind the boys and my players fed off that.

“The pleasing thing is we have played four top sides at home, we couldn’t have had a much tougher start, and we should have had 12 points. We have conceded three late goals in those games but good sides are going to score goals past you at this level.

“There are lots of positives.

“I’m really looking forward to Wednesday [and playing QPR]. The group mentality is outstanding. I’m bitterly disappointed my players did not get the three points they deserved [against Leeds]. It is important to take that momentum into Wednesday.”

The wife of late Wales manager Gary Speed has spoken of a letter he wrote as a teenager that hinted at long-standing mental health problems.

Louise Speed found him dead at home in November 2011 and at the inquest the coroner said he was not satisfied Speed intended to kill himself.

But his wife has since found a letter he wrote to her as a 17-year-old.

In it Speed wrote: "I'm so depressed. I'm just going to sleep now and hope I never wake up."

Speed went on to star as a player for Leeds United, Newcastle United, Everton, Bolton Wanderers and Wales and after retiring became his nation's team manager in December, 2010.

In an interview with the Mirror and WalesOnline, Mrs Speed said she found the letter, written while he was at Leeds United, during research into a book about the Speed family since her husband's death.

"Seeing that was a light-bulb moment for me, in many ways. It answers an awful lot about why he did what he did. It's not something a normal 17-year-old would write, is it? Or not a well one," she said.

"Maybe the mental illness or depression was always there from an early age and it's been ruminating all his life.

"If so, us having Gary until he was 42 was maybe a bonus."

At the 2012 inquest into his death, Mrs Speed said four days before he died her husband had sent her a text talking "in terms of taking his life".

She said the text conversation referred to their "ups and downs" but also mentioned "how important the boys were" and about "moving forward".

"The texts went on about our future together and how excited he was about our journey together," she had told inquest.

The couple had two sons together, Thomas and Edward.

Morning all,

I know we have injuries but I am seriously worried about how goal shy we have been. 1 goal in 5 hours of play.
I agree on some comments above that Clarke needs a go. I dont think Roberts can buy a goal at this level, but could be useful off the bench.
Saiz stepped up which was a plus and for once the Centre Backs played very well together which gives BPF more conifdence.
Tomorrow for me is a must win. We need to get some momentum back

Well said 60's, Pontus winning every header apart from one was paramount to us staying in the game.17 clearances plus 6 tackles doesn't deserve such criticism!

Good point us fans were saying the very same although there were times when we couldn't clear the ball up field as Millwall pressed us from the front so well. Giving away so many throw-ins was like conceding corners which plays straight into their hands. Boro' & Stoke of old play exactly the same way, personally I hate it, just so glad I don't have to watch Millwall every week!

Yes Nick no way did I expect us to be unbeaten & top of the league when I saw our tricky fixture list back in July

There aren't many people in professional football who get under my skin but Neil Harris is certainly one of them.
To me he's just a Millwall gobshite in a suit.
“Our fanbase played a part, really getting behind the boys and my players fed off that. Yeah and how many will be at your next home game Neil?

When these things go for you then you win the game. They didn't but we got a well earned draw.
You've had you cup final for this season Neil, move on.

Morning PP, I'm not a fan of the long ball, but we've almost come undone a few times from passing the ball from defence.

Indeed Chilli

I reckon there were 5,000 additional Wall fans there on Saturday, morons & glory boys who come out of the woodwork for the Leeds game every season. A few hundred of them giving it all at the end of the game whilst Leeds fans laughing at them. In the end stewards had to man-handle them out of the seating areas.

Morning 60's, do you think we play the ball out from the back too often i.e every time?

If we mixed it up, we'd be able to catch them on the hop?

Real shame we don't have a long throw specialist. Its as good as a corner.

We've seen a lot of good long balls out of defence from the likes of Coop and Phillips in particular. It's pick your moment, a 50 yard ball into the oppo's box with everyone in our half is a waste, (frantic clearance aside.) So I think the balance is there
