**Used to frequent a small nightclub in northeast Connecticut called the Shaboo Inn. Dire Straits signed to play there on their first US tour about six months before their first album was released. Once Sultans of Swing became the massive hit it was, the band's manager tried to convince Mark Knopfler to cancel the gig in favor of a larger venue. Knopfler, however, was adamant that the band honor its commitment. He assured Dave "Lefty" Foster, the club owner, that since Lefty had signed the band when nobody knew who they were, the band would reward them now that they were famous. They put on one great show. I sat no more than ten feet from Knopfler that night.

On the current scores above I think you have the 8 v 1 the wrong way round for Dire Straits and T.Rex in the 70's

Good story John and spookily enough I'm listening that very album (In The Gallery current track) as I'm typing this :)
It was many years later that was the only time I saw Dire Straits. It was at Wembley Arena and I think it was the On Every Street tour, so 1991/92. I was far far further than 10ft from Mark Knopfler, but I remember it as I was sat behind Jimmy Nail (who you would have thought could have blagged seats much nearer the stage by pulling in some fellow Geordie mate favours !!)

My wife and daughter went over to Connecticut about 4yrs ago to visit a cousin on her side of the family. From memory they lived in a town called Darien, but I think that was in the south of the state, as he worked in Manhattan.

Saw Dire Straits in 79 but bought the album day of release as I'd already heard the wonderful Eastbound Train somewhere. Debut is still the best album

One of the most innovative bands of the 80's imo, had the pleasure of seeing the Smiths live then Morrissey twenty years later, both excellent gigs.

I probably could name fifty major bands/artists that folk wouldn't vote for on here because of their dislike for an artist/his or her personality/genre of music/etc.

Doesn't mean they have never recorded any great songs.

The Smiths are the most marmite band of all time...you love or you hate. I'm with you. Awful voice, makes Bono look good
