Don’t panic, Don’t panic!

Everything was quiet but seemed to be going ok. We had signed striker Matt Smith from Oldham and McDermott had advised that more deals were lined up and ready to go. Most importantly though we hadn’t sold Sam Byram yet, which must be taken as a positive given our propensity to sell our best players in recent years. After Warnock phoning in his instructions from Cornwall the attitude of the new manager is also a refreshing change. He is making lots of small changes which all add up to a significant culture change at the club. He has intimated that he wants players to live locally and not commute large distances to training, has ensured the first team and academy players mix together more at Thorp Arch and the training pitches now match the exact measurements of the Elland Road pitch. He is keen to state that he is building a football club not just a team, and wants a ‘one club’ mentality. There is even a rumour he has got Ross McCormack to stop drinking. Everything looked good.
That was until last night when the social media sites exploded with rumours of administration and financial dire straits after several people attending a dinner with Brian McDermott at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Leeds advised the manager had made the following comments;
“He was assured he had £3m to spend, picked 7 targets, now, told no money at all. GFH desperate for investment, some statement being made public by the club tomorrow.”
The blogging word has also been getting a bit jittery with recent articles about uncertainty for Leeds United and the deafening transfer silence. There has been no news since McDermott was due to meet with David Haigh and Shaun Harvey to discuss his transfer targets and several signings seem to have passed us by. The silence of the board and the disappearance of the once publicity seeking Salem Patel is worrying some Leeds fans.
I never thought GFH would come in and splash the cash though, it was clear from the beginning that they didn’t have the funds to make major investments and the club was in a less that stable position financially when they took over. The transfer windows doesn’t open until Monday and although clubs can arrange deals prior to then they cannot put pen to paper until then. Until that deadline has passed and our intentions are made clear or until the club has made this supposed public statement I don’t think I will start panicking just yet. If that’s ok?
