Leeds United earnt a valuable point in their first away encounter of the season away against Leicester City.

Brian McDermott made one change to the starting line-up from the season opener against Brighton with Rodolph Austin returning from suspension replacing Michael Tonge in the heart of midfield.

In a game of few chances, The Whites restricted Leicesters forwards and had chances to steal all three points late on in the second half. Chris Wood came closest for the home side when his speculative effort crashed back off the post to deny the hosts a victory. At the other end, Matt Smith’s last gasp header nearly sent the Leeds fans into rapture but was denied by the fingertips of Kasper Schmeichel.

Recently appointed captain Rodolph Austin was a standout performer, the Jamaican was anchored a solid display which McDermott will rely on if the Whites are to mount a play-off push this season. The Jamaican’s resilient defending was crucial to denying the Foxes who were last season’s second highest goal scorers at home in the Championship.

McDermott was full of praise for the attitude of fullback Lee Peltier who was stripped of the captaincy this week, the former Fox turned in a solid performance keeping Leicester’s wing-backs at bay for large periods.

In a tactical battle which saw both defences nullify the opposition, it left both managers frustrated while taking heart from solid defensive displays which upheld their unbeaten starts to the season.

A late cameo from Dominic Poleon gave reason for optimism, the 19 year olds pace threatened to cause the Leicester defence serious problems and he catalysed a wave of attacks for the away side.

Despite a rather scrappy affair, there were a number of positives to take from the encounter, giving McDermott food for thought ahead of next week’s Yorkshire derby against Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road.
