Bolton game crucial for Leeds

Leeds United’s season pretty much ended with defeat to Watford in the FA Cup. The last remaining chance of any potential glory extinguished with that Scott Wootton own goal. If Watford was the death knell of our season then Brighton was the nail in the coffin. A first half capitulation saw four goals conceded in twenty minutes and the heaviest defeat since Steve Evans took charge. Without a victory in the last eleven matches the worrying question is how low we will fall?

It’s a question the team can answer come Saturday at they face troubled Bolton. Saved from administration but not relegation yet Bolton still sit firmly in the relegation places. Twenty third in the table, seven points from the safety of twenty-first, currently occupied by MK Dons. Leeds themselves sit only nine points above the relegation places, eight points closer to the drop than we are to the play-off places. A win against Bolton is a must, if we can’t beat the teams below us at home we really are in trouble.

Both teams form has been pretty dismal of late, though Leeds have picked up more draws than Bolton. Bolton have manged something Leeds haven’t in their last two games though, a win. Two in fact against fellow struggles MK Dons and Rotherham. The reverse leave fixture earlier in the season resulted in a one all draw, a Mirco Antenucci penalty securing the point against a ten man Bolton. The most recent game was of course in the FA Cup where Leeds triumphed two one thanks to goals from Souleymane Doukara and a debut strike from Toumani Diagouraga.

Leeds do have some positive news head of the game. Giuseppe Bellusc will be back in contention after returning from suspension. Steve Evans now has a choice whether he will slot straight back into the team ahead of club captain Sol Bamba. There is also a question mark over Scott Wootton (Isn’t there always) after picking up a knock in the Brighton game. Given recent performance many Leeds fans would be forgiven for being happy if he were absent. Stuart Dallas should also be available again and will add a much needed attacking dimension to the Leeds team.

For me this game is crucial, at the moment we are safe but if we can’t beat teams like Bolton in the position they are in we are in real trouble.
