Eighteen-year-old winger Liam McCarron signs from Carlisle

Leeds United are moving to further strengthen their Professional Development League National Championship winning Under 23s side with the signing more exciting prospects this summer.

Eighteen-year-old winger Liam McCarron joins Leeds from Carlisle United on a three-year deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £250,000. Wolverhampton Wanderers, Derby County and Sheffield United were all believed to be interested in signing up McCarron but Leeds’ success in the Professional Development League last season and the number of U23 players getting their chance in Marcelo Bielsa’s first team will have been good reasons for McCarron to pick Leeds.

Following an excellent start to his second year on Carlisle’s scholarship programme, McCarron signed his first professional deal in September 2018. In the same month he made his Carlisle debut in their Checkatrade Trophy game against Morecambe in September 2018, making his league debut just over a week later against Tranmere Rovers. McCarron made 16 appearances in League Two last season, 13 of which were as a substitute. At just 18 McCarron is certainly one for the future and will initially link up with Carlos Corberan’s Under-23 side, with a view to joining the first team squad.

On social media Carlisle have said of McCarron; Good prospect. Very quick. A bit raw and not ready for first team action week in and week out yet. If you have got that pace and you commit defenders you always have a chance at a higher level. Very speedy direct runner. Needs some work on his crossing and shooting. Bielsa is a very good coach so he could be a future star if he stays injury free.

If rumours to believed this is only the first in a few development squad signings Leeds have already lined up this summer.
