West Brom draw shows Leeds mental strength and fortitude

The top two in the Championship went head to head on New Years Day with West Brom and Leeds United sharing the spoils at the Hawthorns. West Brom took an early lead through Semi Ajayi after another defensive lapse at a set piece by Leeds United but the Whites came back into the game and dominated for the majority of the match. The introduction of Patrick Bamford and Barry Douglas at half time made the league leaders defensively tighter and more or a threat going forward and the scores were levelled after Bamford’s header was deflected off Ajayi, this time into his own net. Kiko Casilla kept the Baggies at bay whilst Bamford had a chance to square to Klich for a winner but chose to shoot instead. Points shared, here’s what our members had to say…

NorfolkWhite: Decent point I guess but Leeds were the better side over the 90 especially after half time when Bamford came on. Kiko made a great save just before half time, would have been a long way back had that gone in. On reflection happy with the point and performance. Harrison was exceptional tonight.

HarryofOz: Very, very good point. Showed great mental strength and fortitude to fightback after conceding that early goal. Defended very well as we have done most of the season and Kiko was very good. An excellent second half performance against a quality team in their own backyard. Well done Leeds. After panning Bielsa for his subs against Cardiff I am looking forward to Whelan lauding Bielsa for turning the game around with his subs today.

White Riot: Deserved to win, but a point keeps us top. Get Pablo, Forshaw and Roberts back and another striker in January in case Bamford gets crocked and we'll win this division handily. Good performance today - apart from the chaotic start.

Weasel: A decent point at the end of the day, a fairly even game and important for us to take something from a match where we went behind.

Faaip: Good draw... I'll take that. At home Brom should have taken the game to us and looked the better team but they didn't. Brom were more scared of us than we were of them. WBA for all their strength and height lost just about every header in our half after the first couple of minutes and that was them playing netball really.

Dezzy: Away from home against the second best team in the league, you’d be happy with a point from that. Bamford showed his worth to this team in the second half and I hope that puts the bed the people calling him poor. Shame Eddie couldn’t get into the game.

Cjay: I’ll make that. Much better second half. Ends the Eddie vs Bamford debate. Eddie is talented, but a one-dimensional goal poacher was easy for experienced giants like Bartley and Ajayi. Find it weird how WBA who can play good football resorted to counters and long balls, bit negative for a home side. Paddy, Costa, Klich, Harrison and Kiko had good games. Decent from Douglas, not a favourite but a bit less gung ho then Ali and we needed that. One on one our defenders are poor, not great defenders but as a team we are solid. Glad they didnt play Zohore from the start. Desperately crying out for more creativity though and every set piece is a heart in mouth moment (Kiko did well after the goal). Happy with a point, lots of time now to get in the 2 or 3 players we really need.

BGWhite: Played well today despite the dodgy start and we'll worthy of a point although Kiko made a few superb saves to keep us in it. Why didn't PB square it to Klich? The lads should take a lot of credit for their performance today particularly after the Brum game which should give them a major boost before seeing off the Sheffield wednesday. Well done lads, you can do it!

1964White: Bamford was outstanding when he came on. Everything clicked into place with Paddy leading the line. Douglas also deserves some credit after coming on for the woeful Alioski. So much happier with that performance today than the Birmingham game, hard to pick too many holes in our display even though we only got a point, we deserved more! Brilliant performance, which convinced me even more that we are the best team in this league.
