Victor Orta pulls of coup to land Jean-Kevin Augustin

Speculation this January has all been around attacking options and who Leeds United would bring in to replace Eddie Nketiah. We’ve been linked with Southampton’s Che Adams, Watford’s Andre Gray, Sheffield United’s Billy Sharpe and rather disturbingly Middleborough’s Britt Assombalonga. But with Leeds struggling to get deals for Premier League strikers over the line Victor Orta turned his attention overseas and has pulled one out of the bad with the signing of Jean-Kevin Augustin. The French striker joins Leeds from Bundesliga outfit Red Bull Leipzig on an initial loan deal until the end of the season with the club holding an option to sign him on a permanent basis. He will wear the number 29 shirt.

Born in Paris, the 22 year old started his career at Paris Saint-Germain. He made his first team debut in April 2015 in the Coupe de France semi-finals against Saint-Étienne at the Parc des Princes, in a 4-1 win. Opportunities were limited behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edison Cavani but Augustin made 31 appearances scoring 2 goals before a €13 million move to RB Leipzig in July 2017. During his spell in the Bundesliga Augustin scored 20 goals in 67 appearances. With competition tough again at Leipzig behind German international Timo Werner plus Yussuf Poulsen and Patrik Schick ahead of him he went out on loan this summer to French club AS Monaco.

The return to his native France has not gone as Augustin would have wished with only 13 appearances and 1 goal to his name in the first half of the season. Augustin is a France youth international, having been capped at every level from Under-16s to Under-21s. A move to Leeds United and the Championship will be a chance to show what he can do. After all a player who was top scorer at the U19 Euros in 2016 ahead of his team mate Kylian Mbappé and has played alongside Zlatan, Cavani and Pastore at PSG will have a lot to prove. Speaking ahead of the Millwall game Marcelo Bielsa said…

He has good mobility, he involves himself in the combined play of the team and he has a lot of presence in the box.

Victor Orta has had to deal with a large amount of frustration from Leeds United fans this month as player after player was linked but no deals completed. The link with Jean-Kevin Augustin only emerged on Friday and Leeds have been quick to get the deal done in just a few days, though probably not in time for the Millwall game. The last couple of seasons may have been frustrating for Augustin but this seems like a genuinely exciting move for player and club. The signing is a bit of a coup for Leeds and if the young Frenchman show anything like his past potential he could really set the Championship alight. Of course, he’ll have to get the nod over Patrick Bamford first.
