Ten of the greatest Leeds United goals

Leeds United players have scored some fantastic goals over the years, and with no live football to watch and everyone stuck in their homes at the moment it's as good a time as any to look back at a few of them. Screamers from Jonny Giles, Harry Kewell, Bradley Johnson and Luciano Becchio, fancy footwork, lightning fast dribbling, waltzing wingers and Yeboah thunderbolts. Here are a few selected from the archives, in no particular order. I'm not saying they are the best 10 ever but they are certainly 10 of the best.

Johnny Giles, 20th March 1971
Leeds United 2, Crystal Palace 1

Johnny Giles was Revie's midfield general, a hard but skilful player. One of the truly great midfield players of the era, if not ever. His sometimes telepathic footballing double act with King Billy was a joy to watch and he scored some great goals too such as this long range effort against Crystal Palace.

Harry Kewell, 3rd January 2000
Leeds United 1, Aston Villa 2

Love him or hate him you can't deny Harry Kewell's ability. He scored a lot of good goals too like this effort against Aston Villa in January 2000. Controlled on the chest, a knee forward before a left foot volley which gave David James no chance in the Villa net.

Bradley Johnson, 19th January 2011
Leeds United 1, Arsenal 3

Bradley Johnson was known for striking a ball pretty hard, usually somewhere over the South Stand down Elland Road but occasionally he got one just right. Having held Arsenal to a draw at the Emirates it was back to Elland Road for the replay. Leeds were already two down when Johnson struck but strike he did, an absolute screamer into the top right corner from 3 yards out.

Luciano Becchio, 22nd December 2012
Leeds United 2, Middlesbrough 1

Luciano Becchio was somewhat overshadowed by Jermaine Beckford in his early days at Leeds United but once Beckford left he shone. His record speaks for itself, 86 goals in 219 appearances. With 75 League goals he is 10th in the all time records. My favourite Becchio goal is his strike against Middlesbrough, left foot volley in off the post.

Tony Yeboah, 21st Ausust 1995
Leeds United 1, Liverpool 0

Tony Yeboah had scored thirteen goals in his first season at Leeds but he started the 1995/96 season on fire. He scored two goals in the first game of the season against West Ham, the second nearly breaking the roof of the net but it was the Liverpool game that launched him into the spotlight. Thirty yards out, first time, boom. I'm not sure David James even saw it.

Mark Viduka, 4th November 2000
Leeds United 4, Liverpool 3

Leeds found themseleves two nil down after 18 minutes against Liverpool but Mark Viduka struck back leveling the scores with goals before and after the break only for Liverpool to take the lead again on the hour. It was then that Mark Viduka latched onto a pass from Dacourt, twisted and turned past two defenders before slotting the ball into the net for his hat-trick. He went on to complete the victory with his fourth a minute later but for me the pick of his goals that day was the hat-tick goal.

Rod Wallace, 17th April 1994
Leeds United 2, Tottenham 0

I love Rod Wallace but he is not perhaps the most remembered Leeds striker of all time. If Lionel Messi had scored this goal however, everyone would be going absolutely mental about it. After a cleared free kick Wallace picked up the goal mid-way in his own half. He crosses the half way line, knocks the ball between two defenders, then a third. Still going he reaches the edge of the area, confronted by two more defenders he curls a shot inside the right post, genius.

Eddie Gray, 4th April 1970
Leeds United 2, Burnley 1

If any goal demonstrates why they called him 'Eddie the Last Waltz Gray' then it's his second versus Burnley in 1970. His first was just as good, a delightful chip from 40 yards but his second is the one that takes the plaudits. A drag back, a shimmy, another turn, another drag back before a clinical finish. A masterly goal from Eddie Gray.

Allan Clarke, 6th May 1972
Leeds United 1, Arsenal 0

Allan Clarke will always be a big part of Leeds United history having scored the only goal in Leeds United's only ever FA Cup final victory. Mick Jones evaded Bob McNab down the right hand side beofre crossing in, Clarke waiting in the box as ever set himself and powerfully headed the ball home for one of Leeds United's most important goals of all time.

Tony Yeboah, 23rd September 1995
Wimbledon 2, Leeds United 4

I know everyone loves the goal against Liverpool, it was an absolute screamer but for me the goal he scored just a month later against Wimbledon was better. The control on the chest, the knee forward, the control to take it past two defenders then he unleashed that right foot. Goalkeepers didn't stand a chance with Tony Yeboah around, the crossbar was pretty lucky to come out of it unscathed as well.
