Leeds United finished the season in style with a four-nil victory over Charlton Athletic before Liam Cooper joined a special group of Leeds United captains who have listed the Football League trophy aloft. It was a slight surreal celebration without any fans in the stadium, but noise was blasted out on the PA system, champagne was sprayed and medals kissed as the players got to celebrate the title with club staff and family. Despite the club having asked fans to stay away from Elland Road large crowds congregated outside the East Stand, signing loudly and setting off fireworks. They were rewarded for their journey as the players embarked an open top bus parked in Lowfields Road to show off their new silverware and celebrate with the fans.
The club received a certain amount of criticism from some fans who followed the advice to stay away. A spokesman for Leeds United said that following consultation with the safety group and Leeds City Council, the club arranged for an open top bus to be parked outside East Stand reception as a contingency to assist dispersal should a crowd congregate at Elland Road. The safety group believed was that a brief appearance from the players with the Championship trophy, would help to signal an end to proceedings, encouraging fans to head home safely.
