With Brighton making it abundantly clear that Ben White would not be moving to Leeds, Victor Orta has moved this week to secure the services of German international defender Robin Koch from SC Freiburg.

Leeds have been interested in Koch for some time but now German sports website kicker are reporting the deal is close to being completed with both clubs having agreed on a basic fee in the range of €13 million plus add-ons. Newspaper Bild have stated a four-year contract is on the table at Leeds. A fee in the region of £11.5 million for a German international seems like a bit of a steal for a player who Leipzig bid €20 million for in January, but with only ten months left on his contract and the financial implications of the Coronavirus crisis this represents a substantial package for Freiburg.

With other clubs, rumoured to include Lazio and Newcastle, out of the running for the 24 year olds signature, Koch announced to his teammates that he would say goodbye to SC Freiburg on Friday evening ahead of flying to England over the weekend for a medical. The hope is he will sign a contract early next week before meeting up with the German national team after being selected in Joachim Löw’s squad to face Spain and Switzerland. In a twist of fate two new Leeds players could be up against each other on the international stage before even kicking a ball for the West Yorkshire club if both Koch and Rodrigo sign on the dotted line.

Koch signed for SC Freiburg from FC Kaiserslautern in the summer of 2017, playing 82 Bundesliga games and scoring four goals. In October 2019 the was called up to the senior national team for the first time and has played twice for the German national side. A ball playing central defender who can also play in the Kalvin Philips role, Leeds have been tracking Koch for over a year and have been very keen to bring him in subject to promotion. As much as the Leeds fans would have loved to have Ben White back at the club next season, this feels like it could be a step up in many ways.

With this new it is becoming increasingly likely that Koch will line-up alongside Liam Cooper in the Leeds United defence at Anfield on 12th September.
