Leeds United’s international stars set to shine

These are crazy times we live in. The season starts in just 10 days having finished only 42 days ago. The Charity Shield was played only a week after the Champions League final and Leeds United have seven players called up for full international duty this week! It would have been eight had Tyler Roberts not withdrawn from the Wales squad as a precautionary measure. Whilst four of the call ups are regulars in their national squads, there is the exciting possibility of seeing Kalvin Phillips in an England shirt for the first time plus the chance to see Leeds two new signings; Robin Koch and Rodrigo go head to head on the international stage.
Three Lions calling for Phillips
Gareth Southgate has been monitoring Kalvin Philips for some time, and rightly so, he has been key to Leeds United’s success over the past two seasons. The odds on him getting his first cap fell sharply at bet365 UK with Euro 2020 on the horizon. But with the Coronavirus pandemic Phillips was robbed of his chance of playing for England this summer, now finally he has been named in Gareth Southgate 24-man squad for England’s upcoming UEFA Nations League games against Iceland and Denmark on the 5th September and 8th September. With Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Winks withdrawal from the squad there could be a good chance of Phillips pulling on the Three Lions for the first time but Declan Rice will still be in pole position for the start in defensive midfield having picked up 7 caps since his debut against the Czech Republic last March.
La Roja v Die Mannschaft
Leeds fans will have an eye on Spain and Germany when they face each other in Stuttgart on Thursday night. Just a couple of weeks ago Leeds fans couldn’t have a imagined these teams facing each other with Spain’s number 9 and Germany’s central defender both Leeds players, but it’s not a dream and we will get a first look at our new signings. Rodrido has already played for Spain 22 times, whilst Robin Koch is just starting his international career for Germany, making his debut back in October against Argentina. Spain's second group match is against Ukraine on Sunday whilst Germany will take on Switzerland the same day.
Cooper, Dallas, Alioski & Klich
Stuart Dallas, Ezgjan Alioski, Liam Cooper and Mateusz Klich are old hands at this international football lark these days and all four are in their national team squads for the Nations League fixtures. Liam Cooper’s Scotland will take on Israel and the Czech Republic with the defender looking to add to his 2 caps whilst fellow home nation Northern Ireland, and our very own Cookstown Cafu, will play Romania and Norway. North Macedonia and lovable Duracell Bunny Ezgjan Alioski will play Armenia and Georgia whilst Poland will pit their wits against the Netherlands and Bosnia and Herzegovina with Mateusz Klich looking to add to his 19 caps following a late call-up.
