Late comeback stuns Foxes

Good Morning. It's Monday 26th February, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Late comeback stuns Foxes

Leeds came from behind late on, to blow the Championship race wide open with three goals in the last 14 minutes, leaving the Foxes shell-shocked at Elland Road on Friday evening. Much was at stake for this top of the table clash, but from the start it was a surprisingly open game, with both sides deciding that attack was the best form of defence. For the majority, the visitors had the measure of Leeds in the final third, both offensively, and whilst defending.

Leicester clearly thought the hosts were vulnerable down their right hand side, with Archie Gray having to work overtime to try and tame their wingers. Joel Rodon time and time again got drawn out of position to bail out the makeshift right-back, causing problems of it's own. Wout Faes had put the Foxes ahead on 15 minutes with a well rehearsed outswinging Dewsbury-Hall corner which got flicked on by Daka. For over an hour Enzo Maresca's side not only maintained their lead, but missed guilt edged opportunities to put them further ahead, including having a goal chalked off wrongly for offside.

Leeds unlikely leveller came on 80 minutes, moments after bringing Connor Roberts in on the action. The loose ball fell kindly for the 28 year old after a strong run from Rutter; his first time shot finding the corner of the net. From this moment onwards, it was all Leeds! Three minutes later, Leeds took the lead. Rutter, who had been quiet for much of the game, was again the antagonist. He rode several challenges from the edge of the area, before finding an outlet in the form of Archie Gray who was now operating a high line on the left flank. His speculative left footed effort took a wicked defection off Faes, all but silencing the Leicester fans who had spent much of the game winding up the Elland Road faithful.

Just to rub salt into the wound, Leeds grabbed a third in stoppage time when Dan James' free kick took a slight nick off Bamford on its way in. It would have been Leeds first goal, direct from a free kick since Raphinha in October 2021.

Post Match Comments

Daniel Farke was full of praise for his side at the post match press conference on Friday evening. Whilst he acknowledged that Leeds were lucky not to have been 2-0 down due to Leicesters second half dominance, he retorted that his side had the better chances in the opening 45 minutes

A great evening for everyone connected to Leeds United. There are many record-breaking statistics but the feeling is more important. You could feel how much it meant to everyone. I'm happy for our supporters to enjoy these moments with our fans. We created the better chances in the first half and I think they were a bit lucky to be in the lead at the break and then we were a bit lucky not to be 2-0 down after that because they had chances on the counter-attack. We fought our way back into it in the last 15-20 minutes. They were all goals of will and fighting spirit. It was a tight game but overall when I judge the full 90 minutes I think it was a deserved win.

Foxes Manager Enzo Maresca rued his sides missed opportunities, citing the disallowed goal as a major factor for the loss. The 45yo bemoaned that they had dominated the game for 80 minutes, but vowelled to remain focused on the remaining 12 games between now, and the end of the season.

It's a big shame but the way we performed was very good. For 80 minutes we controlled and dominated the game. We created many, many chances and football is about taking chances. It was so clear that there was only one team trying to win the game, dominate and create chances. Unfortunately, for the last 10 minutes the dynamic changed. It could have been a totally different game - not only for that [disallowed] goal, but we had many more chances to score a second. I always said the race was very long. I never thought of winning the league by 10 or 15 points. At the end, the difference will be very tiny. We need to focus on the 12 games we have and try to win as many as we can.

Maresca's pre match comments angers Leeds fans

Angry Leeds fans took to social media prior to kick off after Enzo Maresca arrogantly insinuated that Friday's match was just another game for them, whilst was huge for Leeds. Whether he was trying to deflect pressure from his players, or genuinely thought that way, it well and truly backfired. Perhaps if he had taken it more seriously, his side wouldn't have lost so badly! He claimed “It’s a huge, huge, huge game for them. For us, it’s just one more game.”

"Not against Leeds United" they said, we aint taking any chances.
Bugger, damn & blast.
Maybe on the secondary market. Bound to be some on there. Expensive though most likely

Front running is never easy. But generally they had a big lead for a reason and reasume their control.
But very occasionally they just self combust.
