Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds Utd Match Thread

Friday 8th March 8:00pm | Hillsborough

Sky Sports will be in attendance on Friday evening when Leeds visit Hillsborough, hoping to reclaim second spot from the Tractor boys. The Wendies are one of the divisions most in form sides, having won all four of the previous games. A win against their Yorkshire adversaries could lift Danny Rohl's side from 23rd to 16th, such is the congestion around the drop zone. The two sides fought out a goalless draw at Elland Road, during the reverse fixture in early September (Leeds fifth game of the season) when Leeds were still finding their feet. Anything less than three points could seriously effect their automatic promotion hopes.

Daniel Farke has a big decision to make in midfield. Glen Kamara has been poor in recent games, and with Connor Roberts settling in well at right back, the gaffer could drop Kamara in favour of soon to be 18 year old Archie Gray. Roberts offers a fresh pair of legs, which Farke would be stupid not to utilise, especially after their leggy performance midweek against Stoke. Dropping him from right back in favour of Gray would not make sense, especially as the Welshman is stronger in advanced wide areas. It is unlikely that Sam Byram will be asked to play two matches in the space of 72 hours, so expect to see Junior Firpo reinstated at right back.

Dan James was the pick out of the Leeds front men on Tuesday night. His wonder strike should ensure he keeps his place in the starting line up, ahead of Wilfred Gnonto. Jaidon Anthony has been given time off following his mother's funeral on Tuesday and will not travel with the team to Hillsborough.

Daniel Farke addressed the media ahead of the game, expecting a similar squad as Stoke, with a few knocks but no major issues. He expressed concern about the physicality faced by his attacking players, emphasizing the need for referees to better protect attackers from aggressive play. He touched on the importance of youth development, highlighting the presence of young talents like Willy, Archie, and Mateo in recent games. However, he cautioned against rushing their integration, emphasizing the need for a stable core group during this crucial stage of the season.

Looking ahead to the Sheffield Wednesday clash, Farke dismissed any sense of fear, acknowledging the challenges posed by the opposition's aggressive style and the condition of their pitch. Farke also downplayed the importance of mathematical calculations for securing promotion, focusing instead on taking each game as it comes.

In terms of player updates, Farke expressed excitement about Joseph's development after a long-term injury, hinting at a potential increased role in the home stretch. He also discussed Struijk's impending return, praising his earlier contributions to the defense and anticipating his comeback after the upcoming international break.
