Leeds issue zerotolerance policy

Good Morning. It's Monday 17th February, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Leeds issue zero-tolerance policy towards hate crimes

Leeds United have issued a formal statement condemning discriminatory chanting of anti-Palestinian lyrics within a Manor Solomon Chant! Despite initial attempts to address the issue through social media and engagement with fan groups, the club has expressed disappointment that the chant has become increasingly prevalent at both home and away matches. Acknowledging numerous complaints from their own fanbase, Leeds United have reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards hate crime and discriminatory abuse, emphasizing that such behaviour has no place at Elland Road. To tackle the issue directly, the club has identified specific sections of Elland Road stadium as the origin points of the discriminatory chant.

The statement pinpoints the Norman Hunter South Stand, particularly blocks FA5, FA6, SS5, and SS6, as areas of concern after monitoring recent home games. In response, they are implementing heightened security measures, including increased CCTV surveillance and steward presence in these identified blocks for all remaining home matches this season. The club warned that “action will be taken against any person who participates in the chant, including the issuing of a club banning order,” signaling a firm stance against the unacceptable behaviour.

The situation has sparked varied reactions, particularly on social media. Some have attempted to downplay the chant's severity, arguing that while distasteful, it lacks explicitly derogatory language. Many others have voiced outrage, questioning why the club has been seemingly quicker to act on this chant compared to the highly offensive chant regarding Wilfred Gnonto.

After monitoring the situation at recent home games, the origins of the chant at Elland Road appear to come from the Norman Hunter South Stand, particularly in blocks FA5, FA6, SS5, SS6. As a result, there will be an increased CCTV surveillance and stewarding presence in FA5, FA6, SS5 and SS6 at all home games between now and the end of the season and action will be taken against any person who participates in the chant, including the issuing of a club banning order.mDiscriminatory language can be reported by contacting your nearest steward or discreetly via the matchday incident text service by texting LEEDS and your message to 60006. Given what is at stake for the club in the weeks ahead, this is a time we need the fanbase to be united, not divided. Thank you for your co-operation.

Blades re-take top spot

Leeds need at-least a draw this evening if they are to return to the top of the pile following events over the weekend. Sheffield Utd reclaimed top spot for the first time in 2025 with 1-0 victory at Kenilworth Road, curtesy of a 79th minute strike from Anel Ahmedhodzic. It was enough to see the Blades go a point clear at the top of the Championship. Elsewhere, Burnley stay third on 65 points, four shy of Leeds in second, after being held to yet another 0-0 draw, their eleventh of the season. They may have gone over a thousand minutes without conceding a goal, but are starting to lose momentum due to problems at the other end of the pitch.

LUST has brought the problem of MISOPHONIA to the board of directors as it highlights how a lifelong Leeds United fan... Gary feels discomforted.

Gary has always cherished the electric atmosphere of Elland Road, but lately, his matchday experience has been ruined by an unexpected problem... misophonia... triggered by opposition fans.

It’s not just their chants and clapping that get to him; it’s the relentless, grating noises of them eating and drinking. The slurping of beer, the crunching of crisps, the obnoxious chewing of pukka pies, it all sends waves of distress through him, making it impossible to focus on the game.

Every away section feels like an unbearable assault on his senses, turning his passion for football into an anxiety-ridden ordeal. Instead of celebrating goals and cheering his team, he finds himself dreading every match, overwhelmed by the relentless sounds, and he feels that he is being personally targeted.

Determined to reclaim his enjoyment of football, Gary has started a campaign demanding action from the club and authorities.

He argues that opposition fans should either be banned from bringing noisy food and drinks, restricted in their chanting, or even barred entirely if their behavior continues to cause distress.

The endless slurping and chewing, combined with their taunting songs, make him feel trapped in a nightmare. While some dismiss his concerns as an overreaction, he insists that misophonia is a serious condition and it should be recognized that it has been weaponized by opposition fans in an abusive fashion to make his life unbearable.

To him, football should be an inclusive experience for all, and if his distress is ignored, then the game is failing its duty of care to fans like him who suffer from misophonia.

Is it ok to sing about Jimmy Saville, Fat B******ds, Wan*** referees, Willy Gnonto’s nether regions, Ginger cnuts, The Pope, The Queen, Elton John, The IRA ? Should a chant be stopped if 40,000 find it funny but one person finds it offensive or allowed if one finds it funny & 40,000 offensive ?
Is there a difference between the families of German bomber crews and the families of Man United players?

A fine line nowadays when people wake up with the sole intent of being offended at the slightest thing. Open a new packet of thick skins, slip one on and crack open a beer. 🍻
Is it ok? It depends
Where the subject covers where people are hurt / killed [Munich]/ extremely crappy subjects (e.g. Saville) then no. It's not OK.
Some examples.
I'm not ok with the Shoot the Chelsea scum line [I know there's a lot of history but I've never sung it in 40 years]
Willy's nether regions - not really ok. Would rather we changed the word.

In contrast - the AO Tanaka song is brilliant, love that and no one will be offended anywhere.

Passion - absolutely! Put the opposition down, Yes! Lancs / Yorks rivalry - Every time!
Bottom line, we don't need to be deeply offensive to express passion and deep seated pride.

It was not his event, and as such Leeds don't have anything to answer for!
Well I woke this morning & was b****y offended at that but that was before I slipped a new thick skin on for the day.
IMHO Leeds United should have a better understanding of the optics of this and the backlash they’ll inevitably receive from the fans who pay to use Elland Rd every week.

On one hand they’re talking about banning fans who sing offensive songs while allowing someone who speaks hatred about the very country he’s breathing air in.

Could you imagine trying to stop Spurs fans from singing the manor song. We also have a very committed Jewish fan base from N. Leeds.

Bottom line - we should leave politics at the door on the way in...should not be relevant in sport. Therefore we should not sing about Palestine.
