Leeds Utd v Preston North End Match Thread

Saturday 12th April 12:30pm | Elland Road

Leeds United will want to build on their mid-week victory over Middlesbrough as they welcome Preston North End to Elland Road on Saturday. Daniel Farke's side will be looking to regain top spot in the table after Burnley’s Friday night victory over Norwich, which saw the Clarets move back into first place. Farke’s team is eager to respond and keep control of their promotion destiny after a hard-fought win against Boro. Farke, speaking ahead of the match, emphasized the importance of maintaining focus during the business end of the season, noting that Leeds must remain mentally strong and patient in the face of pressure.

Preston, however, will be no pushovers. Despite a frustrating 2-2 draw with Cardiff last time out, they have been solid overall, sitting comfortably in 14th place. Known for their defensive resilience, the Lilywhites have the seventh-best defensive record in the league, though their goal-scoring struggles are evident, with only 37 goals to their name this season. With just two wins from their last 12 outings, and none in their last four away matches, Preston's form away from home has been a cause for concern. Farke, however, is wary of underestimating their capabilities, especially given their ability to secure eye-catching results, such as drawing with Burnley and Sunderland and knocking out Premier League Fulham in the FA Cup.

Leeds will be without the services of Joe Rothwell and Pascal Struijk for the upcoming clash. Struijk’s injury is particularly worrying, with Farke confirming that his season is over. Meanwhile, Dan James has also been ruled out with a hamstring issue, and there is a race against time for his recovery ahead of the Easter weekend. With these absences, Farke may look to shake things up in attack. Isaac Schmidt, who has impressed in various positions since joining the club, could be in line for a start, while Patrick Bamford, who is back in form following his injury troubles, could also play a crucial role in the run-in, offering leadership and experience.

Farke spoke highly of the contributions of his senior players, such as Ethan Ampadu and Bamford, who offer vital leadership and guidance on the pitch. He also praised the determination of players like Largie Ramazani, who, despite being in and out of the team, has shown he can be a game-changer when called upon. Farke’s focus is clear: patience will be key, but his side must continue creating chances and converting them. With a potent attacking force, Leeds are well-equipped to break down a Preston defense that has often relied on being difficult to beat rather than outscoring opponents.

Preston’s manager, Paul Heckingbottom, will be aiming to get one over his former club, but Farke is confident in his squad's ability to rise to the occasion. He knows that the pressure is mounting with each passing match, but it’s a pressure that comes with the territory of being at the top of the Championship. Farke’s philosophy has been to stay calm and composed in these crucial moments, and his calm demeanor will be crucial in helping his players stay focused as they approach the business end of the season.

With the top spot up for grabs and the need to keep pace with the chasing pack, Leeds will be determined to make Elland Road a fortress once again. Preston’s well-drilled defense and workmanlike approach will present a challenge, but Farke’s side should have the quality to prevail, especially with the attacking talent at their disposal. This will be a match Leeds are expected to win, and with the fans behind them, they will look to put on a performance that strengthens their position at the summit.

Swansea played well against us in both matches this season and they deserve a lot of credit for those performances.

It was back to normal v Preston, in front and then keeping possession, keeping the opposition at arms length and simply not taking the chance to finish the game - but we have seen that so many times and often then get the late second to win 2-0.

Against Swansea and Boro we just seemed to be trying to play the glory ball and trying to hit them on the counter. We didn't take control of either game and we do that with the possession game. It may have been down to how Swansea and Boro pressed us rather than a deliberate tactic but for me we needed to show more composure in those games and simply pass the game to death.
