Edin Terzic rumoured for Leeds job but Farke remains ununfazed

Good Morning. It's Monday 28th April, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Is Edin Terzic the Next Man at the Leeds United Helm?

While still in charge at Elland Road, speculation is rife that Daniel Farke's tenure at Elland Road is coming to an end. The rumour mill is already churning, and one name has emerged as an early frontrunner: Edin Terzic. The odds currently reflect this shift in focus, with Terzic sitting as the favourite at 6/4. This suggests a significant buzz around the possibility of the former Borussia Dortmund manager taking over at Elland Road. While Terzic's potential arrival is merely speculative at this point, the odds can offer some insight into the landscape of potential candidates. Sitting close behind Terzic is Jose Mourinho at 2/1. Following Mourinho is Roberto De Zerbi at 3/1, Steve Cooper at 4/1, and Brendan Rodgers at 5/1.

Terzic's recent departure from Dortmund, despite leading them to a Champions League final, has made him an immediately attractive prospect for clubs seeking a dynamic and tactically astute manager. His experience in handling high-pressure situations and developing young talent aligns with the kind of rebuild Leeds United are likely to undertake.

Of course, the presence of names like Mourinho, De Zerbi, Cooper, and Rodgers indicates that the field is far from settled. Mourinho, with his proven track record of success, always remains a tempting option for clubs seeking immediate results. De Zerbi, known for his attacking and progressive style, could bring an exciting brand of football to Elland Road. Cooper and Rodgers, both experienced in the Premier League, offer stability and tactical know-how.

Ultimately, whether Terzic becomes the next manager of Leeds United remains to be seen. However, his position as the early favourite suggests that the club may be considering a bold move to secure his services. The coming weeks will undoubtedly be filled with further speculation and developments as the future of the manager's position at Leeds United unfolds.

Farke unfazed by speculation amid sacking rumour

Daniel Farke has said that speculation around his future as Leeds Manager does not surprise him! He led the Whites to automatic promotion at the second time of asking, yet just a few days after the celebrations had died down, the Daily Mail launched a verbal warning, insinuating the 48yo shouldn't get too comfortable.

It’s not surprising because I knew exactly which club I signed for. I’m not sure how many managers Leeds have had in the last 20 years, but normally, it’s a good effort if you last for three months. Once you sign for this club, you know from this moment there is lots of pressure, lots of noise, lots of expectation. It’s nothing new or nothing I wouldn’t expect because this club is so emotional and so big. Journalists from all over the country, who are never here, have never spoken to one person within the club. Of course, they want to write about Leeds and if you want to deliver some news that is clicked, you have to bring shock news.

Chairman Paraag Marathe, who is expected to speak to the media next week, will be one of the key decision-makers at Elland Road on Farke’s future. He was asked about his relationship with the American. We’ve got a really trustful and really good relationship. I talked to Paraag last night. We are already speaking about a few things, what we want to do in the future. It also lasted a while until I said yes to Leeds because I wanted to speak, two years ago, about a few things. It was not an easy decision to go back to the Championship. For no other club, would I have taken the challenge of this big race in the Championship.

We’re working pretty hard to have a proper budget. You need to make sure you improve in every department. We have to invest in the training ground. We have to invest in the playing squad. There will, hopefully, be many new incomings, quality and the right players to improve you. That’s quite important. We want to invest in the stadium anyhow. You have to improve every day as a club in all areas. This is what we’re working on. It’s not just one simple target, you just sign one or two players and that’s it, you have to be good in many decisions.

They then offer a ridiculous list of possible candidates to take the man's job when he has just succeeded in accomplishing the task which he was given . Even more mystifyingly there are people who think that such a decision would make sense . Most of the alternatives proffered by the various pundits are 'has beens' or 'never weres' and lots of them have little or no Premiership experience . The excuse offered for this charade is alleged to be 'Farkes Premier League record ' which comprises of 1 and 1/2 seasons with Norwich who gave him little or no financial backing . I don't believe any of the vaunted candidates would have performed better under those circumstances and most of them would have done significantly worse . As for the newly crowned Manager of the Year if that anti-football philosophy is the cream of the Championship then there is no hope left for football .

Agree completely !!

Born in 1967, he has managed clubs across Europe and Asia, including Bayer Leverkusen, Red Bull Salzburg, PSV Eindhoven, and most recently Benfica. His tactical philosophy emphasizes intensity, fast transitions, and attacking football, heavily influenced by the modern pressing school that emerged in Germany.

His first major success came at Red Bull Salzburg, where he won the Austrian Bundesliga and cup double in the 2013–14 season. Salzburg were a dominant force under him, playing exciting football and overwhelming domestic opponents. That success earned him a move to Bayer Leverkusen, where he built a team that could challenge the top of the Bundesliga, reaching the Champions League and earning plaudits for their style. However, inconsistency and defensive vulnerabilities plagued his time there, and he was sacked in 2017 after a heavy defeat to Dortmund.

He then went to China to manage Beijing Guoan, where he had a decent run but didn’t win the league, and was dismissed in 2019. After that, his most significant success came with PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands. He won the Dutch Cup in 2022 and helped rejuvenate the squad, although critics pointed out he could not dethrone Ajax in the Eredivisie during his tenure.

At Benfica, Schmidt made an immediate impact, winning the Primeira Liga in 2022–23 during his first season, restoring the club to the top of Portuguese football with a rejuvenated attacking side. However, his second season (2023–24) was less successful, marked by early European exits and a title challenge that faltered. While not a total failure, it highlighted a recurring theme in Schmidt's career, impressive starts often followed by a drop in consistency or difficulty sustaining momentum in the long term.

Schmidt is often praised for his tactical clarity and player development but criticized for tactical inflexibility and defensive fragility in crucial games.
So the logic would be to get him in for the first few matches, as we have started slowly under Farke. Then sack him and bring back Farke to steam roller the league.

Seriously though just looking at that cv would have me extremely worried if we appointed him and can see nothing to suggest he would be an upgrade.

Farke did a good job in the interviews last night in terms of dodging questions about his position going forward.

He did look like a man who could see the light of a train coming at him though.

It would sicken me off big style if we sack Farke after what he has achieved....back him with some good signings and give him the chance to prove himself in the PL. It's just as big a gamble to employ a name most of us have never heard of and if it happens he will have to work bloody hard to get my backing.
