I’d always be hoping for young manager to the Moyes type. Maybe if its Emery level then a more mature manager is fine but giving young managers a chance seems to be the in thing. I say that with zero homework but it does seem to be the current vibe.
But I suppose most fans want a marquee manager and a McKenna type would never get a chance.
The how many games poll would be up before he arrived.
Crikey old Emery is only 52.
We'd all probably prefer some ambitious left field appointment if the time came.
But we have to look at what went before.
The safest most obvious appointment they could, Farke.
The sort of appointment that 5 minutes of googling "most successful Championship coach" would bring up.
It would have bought up 2 names, Scott Parker and Daniel Farke (the other names either in work or too old) or Big Sam incidentally who actually has a better Championship record than Farke.
And fear of the unknown is powerful and powerful in our fanbase.
If you go look at the last manager poll
Rodgers, Potter, Corberan, Farke, Vieira, Carrick, Ryan Lowe and Jon Dahl Tommason got votes.
The only one who you could say was unknown would be Knutsen who got votes.
Current Brighton manager was on it, Fabian Hurzeler, 0 votes, current Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris, 0 votes, Kieran Mckenna, 0 votes.
I imagine the fanbase reflects the owners, fear of a risk.
Ironic really, had Radz and Orta followed the must not take a risk just Google the most successful Championship managers list and pick one criteria then one of the people above Farke on that list never happens.
6 years ago Radz took a risk on a 60+ year old famously temperamental maverick with 0 experience of the English game or even a solid grasp of the language.
One who had fallen out with owners, whose last club spell had gone horribly and whose most noteworthy achievements were quite a few years in the past.
That wasn't a safe appointment . . . .
