Leeds United may have sometimes struggled to hit the high notes on the pitch this season.
But the club’s new owner, Massimo Cellino, was still in celebratory mood at United’s end-of-year awards dinner on Saturday night.
The keen guitarist got up on stage with Leeds band The Pigeon Detectives to perform two songs at the end of their set.
Cellino added his musical talents to Pigeons original I Found Out before storming through a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s Hey Joe.
And his appearance went down a treat with the audience at the event, which was held in the Centenary Pavilion at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground.
One attendee, Emma Burnell, 32, of Gildersome, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “It was absolutely brilliant.
“Cellino looked like he was really enjoying himself up there. The Leeds players were stood at the side of the stage watching him and they all had big smiles on their faces as well.”
Rumours had been rife before the bash that Cellino would be making a guest appearance with the Pigeons.
The band even tweeted a picture of themselves last week with the Italian after what they said was a “great jam session”.
Cellino’s love of rock music is well documented, with the flamboyant businessman finding time away from his football interests to play in a group called Maurilios.
In an interview last month, he was asked what song would best describe his new club and – in a nod to United’s rollercoaster recent history – came up with the AC/DC track Highway To Hell.
Leeds manager Brian McDermott is also handy with a guitar – footage of him performing the Bob Dylan classic Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door in a pub proved a hit on YouTube last year.
United captain Ross McCormack was a three-time winner at Saturday night’s event, taking home the awards for fans’ player of the year and players’ player of the year as well as the goal of the season prize.
