What a genius Maradona was. Messi and Diego by far and away the best players I’ve seen to play the game. As one commentator famously said of him as he scored his wonder goal against England, “different class, different class”.
Maradona is, for me, the best player ever. Absolutely sublime talent. Lived a full and very colourful life but loved to play the game. Absolutely loved it. Rest easy DM.

Would agree 100% For me better than Pele as Pele was a great player in a Brazil team full of great players. Brazil would likely have won the world cup without Pele. Maradona almost singlehandly (pun intended) took an ordinary Argentina team to World Cup glory and then the final 4 years later as well as making Napoli the best team in Italy for a few years despite them being fairly average.

Too young for Pele? Who for me stands head and shoulders. In fact I'm not sure Diego gets in that 70 Brazil team, the greatest I've ever seen. Cruyff would be second the epitome of finesse and vision. Best #3, not his fault he was Irish.. A perfectly balanced footballer with skill at least comparable to Diegos' if not greater.
Pele, 1970 on the decline so not old enough to see in his pomp. My old fella always maintained Duncan Edwards would have been better than any of them.
Opinions as with every thread on here.
Arguments will forever rage over who is the greatest player ever. Diego is certainly one of them. Such a shame his decline was accelerated by a cocaine addiction. At his best he was unplayable.
RIP Diego
