Guiseley AFC vs Leeds United
Thursday 11th July 2019, 7:45pm | Nethermoor Park
Leeds United started their pre-season in style on Wednesday night with a five nil victory over York City at Bootham Crescent. Jack Harrison scored twice with Kemar Roofe, Pablo Hernandez and Adam Forshaw all bagging one each before ten second half substitutions saw some of the promising young talent from the U23s starred in the second half. Alfie McCalmont had already impressed in the first half deputising for Kalvin Phillips in the defensive midfield role before Pascal Struijk, Liam McCarron, Clarke Oduor and Oliver Casey in particular proved why there is so much buzz around the U23 side.
It’s hard to judge any team this early on in pre-season, especially against a team plying their trade outside of the Football League but Leeds looked sharp. Passing was quick, accurate and they took their chances well. I’ve seen Leeds sides falter in pre-season at Bootham Crescent in the past. The most impressive part of the game though must be the performances from the U23 lads. Sure, they didn’t score but they dominated possession and created chances, they were unlucky not to convert a couple of them. The future is most definitely bright and with the likes of Casey, Struijk and Hosannah coming through it’s easy to see why Halme and Diaz were let go by the club.

Tonight Leeds play their second friendly match of pre-season, and last before they step on the plane for their pre-season tour of Australia, against National League North side in Guiseley AFC at Nethermoor. The game will be shown live and free on LUTV. Kalvin Phillips was one obvious absentee from last nights match but is expected to feature tonight against Guiseley along with Mateusz Klich, Gianni Alioski and new signing Helder Costa. Luke Ayling is doubtful after picking up a knock.
