The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Tuesday 23rd July) - Jansson not to be replaced, Sawyers bid upped and Leeds lose to Saudi's

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Tuesday 23rd July, and here are the Leeds Utd headlines

Jansson not to be replaced

Director of Football Victor Orta has suggested that Leeds do not need another centre back to replace Jansson:- “We had a plan at the start of pre-season in terms of ins and outs. Now, more or less, we are 90 per cent covered in the plan we have.”

This is backed up by Phil Hay who offered the following comments :-
The Whites currently have six defenders on their books; Ayling, Cooper, Berardi, White, Douglas and Davis. We also have Shackleton, Dallas and Alioski who make more than adequate wing backs. If Leeds defence was not strong enough last season with Jansson in it (who Bielsa described as his player of the season last May) why would Bielsa choose not to strengthen?

Could Romaine Sawyers be the final piece of Bielsa's jigsaw

Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers is still very much on Bielsa's radar. The Leeds Manager is a long term admirer of the 27 year old playmaker. He has been also attracted the interest of Scottish Champions Celtic. It is understood that Leeds have recently upped their offer for the Saint Kitts International! Bearing in mind Bielsa's long term admiration for this player, why wasn't a deal struck with the Bee's when we (under) sold Jansson to them?

Leeds outplayed by Saudi's

A Leeds Utd XI were soundly beaten by Saudi outfit Al Ittihad in a behind closed doors game at Thorp Arch yesterday. The makeshift XI mainly made up of reserves lost 4-2 against the Saudi Premier League team.

Morning EB et all

We’ve all been saying for the last couple of seasons that we need another top quality CB now Pontus is gone surely that still applies or am I looking at this wrong :duno:

Good point EB if we are that keen on Sawyers why wasn’t the deal done whilst doing the Pontus deal :duno:

Hate loosing but then it’s Pre-season with a makeshift side and it was against a team from that top footballing Nation Saudi Arabia

Looks like another season of square pegs in round holes. Couple of injuries and the merry go round will start all over again.
A deal involving Janson is the obvious one there.. ludicrous !

Hi all

Pontus has been replaced - by White. Plus younger players like Struijk will be coming through.

Maybe the Bees weren't ready to sell Sawyers and still have no pre-plan to do so. However if we make them the right offer, we may get him. We wanted to get rid of Pontus, so the deal happened.

Morning folks.

Radz did warn us that we would have to rely on the U23s more this season...

So we sell two centre backs in Halme and Jansson and bring in a loaner and that makes us stronger??? Good point about Sawyers, what does that say about our transfer strategy and our bargaining skills?

Not sure who played in the friendly but hopefully we will see the highlights at some point, then we can start getting worried.. Start he says

Just a Q. Why have Leeds not lined up a big home friendly before the season begins?

Jansson.

NOt replacing Jansson would be a huge risk and no matter how positive a fan you are the reality is nobody knows if Ben White is any good. Made the point before but if White is so good why did Brighton sign a league 1 cb (Matt Clarke) rather then using White this season?

Sawyers.

Decent player Sawyers, just be nice to see the club spend some money for a change on improving the squad.

Friendly.

Bit hard to judge without seeing it but losing 4-2 to a poor Saudi side isnt great. I read that players like Costa, White, Ali and Klich played so it wasnt a weak side. Hopefully a wake up call for pur board and coaching staff.

Morning Ratscoot, I understand that Bielsa has faith in White, but its a gamble as the Brighton youngster has never played at Championship level before, and we're asking him to be top drawer.

Re Sawyer - Unbelievable...

I don't think much thought was put into the LUFC XI. Its almost as if Bielsa didn't want it to happen...

Pontus a colourful player, hard nail when the mood was good, but on his bad days he was really was bad. In many ways exactly the Leeds type. But the thing I believe let him down is that he is not a cl ever man. He will still be remembered as one of our good players.

I see all the doom and gloom merchants are out again.

Firstly what would be the point of having U23s if not to be producing players good enough for the first team? The club has been buying in players, be they foreign or lower league, into our youth set-up with the aim of some of them being good enough to be first team players. We also have players that have been progressing with the club through the various age categories. Last year did any of us know if Shackleton or Clarke were good enough? Did any of us even know their names?

So we have sold PJ who was presumably down to 4th choice in Bielsa's list of centrebacks and Halme who was even further down as KP was selected to play CB ahead of him. If the injuries bite then why not give matches to our youngsters who are knocking on the door, if they never get a chance how will we know if they are good enough? We need to get over PJ, he wasn't going to be a starter next year no matter which Leeds fans rate him as the person who picks the team doesn't see him fitting into his system. Keep PJ as 4th choice? Yes I am sure he would have been happy with that and trained hard every week etc just in case he was needed and not become a nuisance.

We lost a friendly, big deal. The fact is was just played at TA and not advertised etc shows how important it was, just a fitness run out more than anything else and maybe a chance for Bielsa, if he was there, to have a look at some of the players.

How do we know Bielsa is keen on Sawyers? We have been linked to 100s of players this summer with very little actual evidence to back it up. Until we actually sign a player I am sceptical about our 'reported' interest in them.

Meh, poor keeping for 3 (Miazek in goal, on the afternoon he stepped off the flight back from Oz), their second was scrappy/flukey.
Good run out I'm sure and our goals were good.

Do you know anything about the side we were playing? I had never heard of them and thus cant judge the level.

They are one of the Saudi top teams.

I have to say the Leeds players looked lackluster...

Heard of them yeah.

Pretty successful side.

Dont think the standard is very good, Saudi league seems to attract flops like lower league journeyman Brad Jones, big money flop Ahmed Musa, Carlos Villanueva another English football flop, Bebeto ended his career their in his late 30s.

Decent side in their country but distinctly average over here id think, doubt they are any more then mid table Championship standard.

They finished 10th out of 16 last season.
