Match Thread Leeds U18's & U23's Match Thread - Champions 2020/21

Post by Chilli D »

Surprised no-one has mentioned this today.
The U23's picked up where they left off last season and beat Millwall this afternoon 3-2.
A strong looking team won with goals from Strujik, Nketiah and a 96th minute winner from Bogusz.
When you look at the personnel on duty today we really do have a strong squad.
Any one of those that played could do a job for the first team, some of them already have.
And we have Ayling and Roberts to return as well.
Things are looking good.

Seeing that lineup today suggests we will see the same starting 11 on Weds.

I thought for such a strong lineup Leeds should have romped that match.

Last season the U23s seemed to play better when 'first teamers' weren't in the team. Hugely different approach during the games for youngsters trying to prove they are good enough compared to 'first teamers' using it as a fitness run out and trying not to get injured but not playing at 100%. A bit like how in cup games against lower opposition and the lower league side give it their all as it is their biggest game of the season/career whereas the bigger team players are just hoping not to get clattered and thinking their superior ability will see them win.

Very good point.

The scoreline suggested a close game yet as is typical with us, we shut Millwall out for the majority of it but lapses of concentration nearly cost us. That said, some brilliant performances from Kun, Bogusz, Nketiah and Strujik. We always looked like the winners even at 2-2 with 94 gone.

Bogusz must be close to getting his chance in the first team surely?
I find it strange that MB replaces Klich with Costa, a central midfielder for a winger when he could go 'like for like by bringing on Bogusz.
He's still very young though, I'm sure his time will come. Maybe against Stoke in the cup?

0-0 draw with Bristol City, despite Costa, Shack, Douglas, Clarke, Meslier and Berardi all featuring. We play a lot better when it's just the kids and no first teamers. It seems Struijk is even being benched at CB in u23s games now.

First time I have had a look at McKinstrey, and he is very lively on the right wing.

5-0. Gotts scores calmly from an Ayling pull back.
