Leeds Utd v Hull City Match Thread - Phillips in for Alioski

Post by Ellandback1 » Mon Dec 09, 2019 9:06 am

Leeds Utd v Hull City

Tuesday 10th December 2019 19.45 | Elland Road

Leeds face their second Yorkshire Derby in 72 hours as Grant McCann's Hull City visit Elland Road on Tuesday evening.

Having won six games on the trot, creating an eight point gap between second and third in the process; Bielsa's men will be brimming with confidence, but Hull be certainly be no pushover. The Tigers, albeit in 12th place, are only three points away from the play off's and with Jarrod Bowen scoring his 14th and 15th goal of the season, dispatching Stoke at the weekend Leeds will have to be on top form if they are to extend their winning run to seven games.

We all know that Bielsa does not like changing a winning team, but certainly has the tools at his disposal should he wish to. Influential midfielder Kelvin Phillips will return to the starting line up following his one match ban for racking up 5 yellow cards in place of Gjanni Alioski. Ben White will switch back to central defensive duties alongside Berardi. Liam Cooper will miss out again following the calf strain he picked up in training last week. Hull City boss Grant McCann has no new injury worries following Saturday's 2-1 win against Stoke City.

Leeds are looking to avoid losing consecutive league matches against Hull for the first time since December 2012, losing 2-0 against the Tigers in their most recent encounter. Hull have never won consecutive league visits to Elland Road, winning 2-0 there in December 2018 under Nigel Adkins. Leeds are unbeaten in nine league games (W7 D2), winning the last six in a row. The Whites have conceded just three goals in those nine games, and have kept a clean sheet in the last three.

Leeds Starting XI:
Casilla, Berardi, White, Ayling, Phillips, Dallas, Klich, Hernández, Costa, Harrison, Bamford

Subs: Douglas, Alioski, Nketiah, Miazek, Struijk, Gotts, Clarke

I can see this being a draw. Bowen to score first, Bamford to level late on - 1-1

Hull are like Leeds last year in that they play better away from home,
And they also have an annoying habit to beating teams near the top
of the table and succumbing to teams at the bottom.
Beat Preston 4-0 and lost to Barnsley 3-1, so they are having a topsy turvy
season.

Perhaps they have the best goal scorer in the division and it is good that
Kalvin is back and lets hope he can shackle Bowen, and with Ben back in
a more comfortable role in defence, it will be a question of what comes out
on top, the Hull attack or the Leeds defence.

Another win would be nice but I think it will be a drawn game.
I hope the team prove me wrong.

Bielsa wasn't happy with our defending on Saturday so he'll definitely bring back Phillips to give us some composure between the edge of our box & the halfway line. We'll need KP to keep tabs on Jarrod Bowen too!

Hopefully Cooper is fit too, unsure of the severity of Coops current injury :duno:

The obvious change will be to put Phillips back in and put White back into defence, then the conundrum starts, he prefers Berardi there, which means moving Ayling back to RB but Dallas did nothing wrong there you could move him back to LB but Alioski had a great game scoring a wonderful goal. I think he may "rest" Dallas

I think you maybe right Ges

Difficult to omit Alioski with his energy, enthusiasm & our most likeliest defender to score a goal.

The return of just Phillips for Dallas would mean only one change in our set-up

Phillips has to come back in, White has to move back.
Personally I prefer Dallas to Ayling at RB.
Anyway I'll be happy with whatever decision Bielsa makes.

Didnt MB say after Huddersfield that Cooper wouldn't be back for Hull?

I didn't hear that Cjay, wouldn't be surprised if Cooper is set to miss more games as I don't think he has ever recovered from his initial injury.

This is our most difficult game in months on Tuesday. They are inconsistent but on their day they have beaten four teams who we couldn't in Forest, Derby, Presto ( whom they absolutely battered) and Wednesday.

Bowen is the obvious hitman but Grosicki is a real handful too. Add to that their two strikers Eaves is 6"5 and Irvine is 6"2 Huddersfield did well to exploit our struggle with the high ball into the box and we can expect more of the same on Tuesday ( and probably for the rest of the season too)

This is a real test for us in our back yard, if we come out of the game with a clean sheet I will be amazed.
With no Cooper in the team I wonder what Marcello will come up with to meet this threat.

Don't fancy Berardi against those 2. he struggled at times on saturday.

I think you're both pretty much spot on. Obviously Phillips has to come back with White moving back to his natural position. If Cooper is fit, then he plays with Alioski and either Dallas or Ayling while Berardi takes a seat. Otherwise it's Berardi in place of Cooper.

The only other question is how many minutes does Nketiah get?

Absolutely.

Berardi's a beast, but I worry about his ability to match up against taller strikers. He's listed at 5' 10", but I have to think that's being a bit generous.

Cooper not fit to play

White & Berardi are CB's tomorrow night

Maybe the last fifteen minutes pending on how the game is panning out

Off the ball Eddie appeared a bit rusty last Saturday

Think this small CB thing is nonsense to be honest
I wanted to flash this watch, I flash it all the time. It's my antique pocket watch and it makes me look British...and I need that for my analysis. It is a gorgeous gold pocket watch however and I'm very proud of it. You see my grandfather, on his death bed, ..sold me this watch!

You would mate

We weren't great in the air at Huddersfield, the terriers won several headers in & around our box & had two free headed efforts on goal we got away with from poor defending.

You can rave about Berardi & Ayling all you like but they are not CB's by any means, it's a specialised position that needs recognised CB's there & just not to show favouritism I don't like KP in that position too!

I'll be over the moon if we bring in a CB during January especially if Cooper's injury continues to reoccur
