Middlesbrough v Leeds Utd Match Thread - Berardi in for Phillips, Kiko Starts, No JKA!

Post by Ellandback1 »

Middlesbrough v Leeds Utd

Wednesday 26th February 2020 19.45 | The Riverside Stadium

Having worked hard to open up a five point gap between themselves and the play off' hopefuls, Leeds will be confident that they'll be able to brush aside a below par Middlesbrough. The Smoggies have played consecutive games against the bottom three, picking up one point from a possible nine; leaving the Teessiders three points from the drop zone. Another loss could spell the end of Jonathan Woodgate's tenure at the Riverside.

Having hobbled off during the White's victory over Reading at the weekend, Kelvin Phillips is unlikely to be risked. Gianni Alioski stands by. With no news from the FA in regards to Casilla's racism charge, we can expect the former Real Madrid shot stopper to keep his place between the sticks if his fingure injury is not too severe. The longer it takes for the FA to come to a decision, the more difficult it will be to punish the Spaniard. Patrick Bamford looks set to face his former club, surely the perfect opportunity to find his striking boots. A month after signing, Jean Kevin Augustin will be wondering when Bielsa will give the French man his starting debut!

Last time out Leeds United demolished the Teesiders in a compehensive 4-0 victory at Elland Road. Patrick Bamford opened the scoring after just three minutes before Matteusz Klich grabbed a brace and Helder Costa chipped in with another to complete the rout. Struggling Middlesbrough remain without injured trio Daniel Ayala, Dael Fry and Patrick Roberts. Ayala and Fry are expected back in two to three weeks but it is not yet known when Roberts will be fit.

Leeds have completed a league double over Middlesbrough in only one of the past 17 seasons the sides have met, doing so in 2014-15. Middlesbrough are unbeaten in their past three home league matches against Leeds United (W2 D1) since a 1-0 defeat in February 2015. Middlesbrough (8.3%) are one of just three teams to have a lower shot conversion rate in the Championship this season than Leeds (8.7%). Indeed, the Whites have had more shots on target than any other side in the division (175), whilst only Luton (100) and Nottingham Forest (112) have managed fewer than Boro (115).

Leeds Starting XI:
Casilla, Ayling, White, Cooper, Dallas, Berardi, Klich, Harrison, Costa, Hernandez, Bamford

Subs: Meslier, Casey, Alioski, Douglas, Shackleton, Stevens, Roberts

Middlesbrough, Kelvin Phillips, Kiko Casilla, Patrick Bamford

Boro are on the verge of the precipice.

But as per usual everyone picks up their game against Leeds

Last season we had the Clarke collpase at HT leading to the 101st minute equaliser from KP.
Can Pablo play on Weds and Saturday? He looked knackered on Saturday?

Tomorrow WBA, Forest , Preston and Brentford all play and wouldnt it be great if we went into our game with the chance to make the gap between us and those below us even greater?

He was our best player, I was refering to his interview after the game he looked shattered.

Plus at 34 his recovery times wont be as good as in the past, no matter how got he is.

According to Shotton there is no better team to bounce back against than Leeds, arguably the best team in the league. I know there are occasion where we have let ourselves down against woeful opposition but still you wouldn't say we would be your first pick to play after a bad run - hopefully he will be eating his words when we score 4 again without reply.

Boro have only won once this calendar year, on the 1st January.

Woody seems to be blaming his players a lot which is a bit risky for a novice.

Might work for Pep, Jose, Klopp, MB, managers with a reputation and achievements, but for Woodgate to do it is risky imo.

We should win, Boro are in a mess (appointing Woodgate was such a weird one) he said he wanted to play attractive attacking football but what about Woody convinced Steve Gibson he could? No clue.

Boro fans are on the verge of turning totally, they were chanting "your not fit to wear the shirt" against Barnsley.

Come out fast and push them back, squeeze them, make sure they cant get out of their own half for the first 15mins (lord knows we wont score) and the fans will turn, that will transmit to the players and eventually hopefully we will convert one of our 57 chances.

In Jonathan Woodgate’s press-conference on Tuesday he said that Daniel Ayala, Dael Fry, Anfernee Dijksteel and Patrick Roberts would most likely miss the game.

Boro have lost recent games when Ayala has not been in defence.

We’re a much better side, starting to turn our form around and these guys are in free fall. Looks simple but how many times have teams on a poor run turned us over! We should win easily but this league is insane. But I think we’ll cut loose and win easily, fancy Bamford to score against his old club but hope Augustin gets a start.
I’d also rest Pablo if Phillips is fit as the guy needs a break, has only missed games he’s been injured for and that doesn’t count as a rest. We need to mange the squad we have and I think Pablo coming off the bench for the last 30 minutes if needed would benefit him for the run in, if Phillips is out though we need his experience

Agreed, we should be able to win without being full strength.

Pablo cantvplay three games in a week, I think wwcwill need him more against Hull than tonight.

Both Boro and Hull have 2 points from 15 in their last 5 matches. Tends to be that run of form that we struggle against but if Woody doesn't park the bus(es) surely we should be ok...

Berardi in for Phiilips, be interesting to see if that's a direct replacement or Berardi into CD and White to DMF...or both at the same time
