What Now For Football?

England's football bodies decided they had little option other than to extend the current suspension.

It means the FA Cup will be stuck at the quarter-final stage for a bit longer, promotion and relegation issues are unresolved and Liverpool nervously await the chance to complete their first league title triumph since 1990.

But while nothing seems to be happening, plenty of conversations are occurring and scenarios for concluding the historic 2019-20 season are being discussed.

Fundamentally though, these are the five options on the table:

1. Null and void the season

2. End the season now

3. Set a deadline for completion

4. Play behind closed doors

5. Wait to complete the season

Encouraging news :

Many think the 5th option is the best

The cups can be done away with

Season should be finished - either behind closed doors or not.

It doesn't matter if next season - as originally intended - takes place or not, or is shortened in some way or another.

But as this season has begun and is well advanced, it should be completed properly.

Absolutely Harry

Next season is irrelevant right now!

It really is a difficult dilemma and unbearably frustrating as a Leeds supporter with the team playing so splendidly and seemingly promotion-bound in its centenary season. Would hate for it to be cheapened by cutting it short or, god forbid, scrapped completely because of Covid.

Still there really is no telling when football in any form could safely resume. I wish it could come back soon, though I suspect it could be a very long wait indeed with no telling what might happen in the interim.

I think the final verdict will depend more on the timing of when it is deemed safe for football to resume. If, as I suspect, it's somewhere around December 2020 I can't see the EFL accepting a leftover quarter season as the only football to be played for the year. I imagine they would rather start from scratch and work through as many matches as humanly possible in a shortened campaign to recoup the losses they'll have suffered.

In that case the only available options will be 1 or 2.

No need to decide now, still plenty of time but they should be planning for various scenarios.

The view now should be to complete the season when safe to do so. As we get closer to June contracts become an issue but let's see where we are at the start of May first.

I've set my expectations that the season is void and we start again in the Championship next season without Bielsa.

If we finish the season and go up or if the current/average positions are taken and we go up then great. Will feel a bit hollow if we don't complete the season though.

Isn't there going to be a winter break for the next World Cup in 2022, line everything up to fit in with that.

tbh I don't think anyone in football authority knows either - there's no possible resolution as long as the virus is deemed to be rampant.

I think the 2022 WC commences in December 2022
