The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Mon 1 June) Fears of congregation may force authorities to switch games away from Elland Rd

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Monday 1st June, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Championship set to restart 20th June

Following the Government announcement at the weekend to allow elite sporting events to return, the EFL have provisionally set a date of 20 June for the Championship to recommence. The window stretches until 30th July for the play off final. Although games will have to be played behind closed doors, as long as safety guidelines are met, clubs may stage matches at their home grounds. EFL Chair Rick Parry said...

With Sky Bet Championship Clubs set to return to full contact training later this week and following Saturday’s Government announcement, we are edging closer towards resuming the 2019/20 EFL season. We have therefore today consulted with the Board’s Championship Directors and agreed to fixtures restarting behind closed doors on 20 June.

Whilst matches will unfortunately have to take place without supporters, we are working with our broadcast partners, EFL Championship Clubs and all relevant stakeholders to broadcast the remaining 108 games plus Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs either live on Sky Sports, iFollow or a Club’s equivalent streaming service.

We must stress that at this stage the date is only provisional and will only be confirmed once we have met all the requirements, as the health, safety and well-being of all participants, staff and supporters remains our top priority.

Cearly completing the season in a safe manner is going to require a significant effort by all concerned and, whilst not unprecedented, it will need Clubs to play a significant number of matches over a relatively short period of time.

Fears of congregation may force authorities to switch games away from Elland Road

The Chief Sports reporter for the Times, Martyn Ziegler has revealed that football authorities are concerned about 12 “high risk” matches that might lead to fans congregating outside stadiums and have identified Elland Road as being one of the main issues. Leeds fans are one of the most passionate in the land, and follow the Whites religiously whatever their predicament.

With social-distancing guidelines in place, local safety advisory groups and police are most concerned about fans congregating outside Elland Road, Anfield and the Hawthorns) on match days, especially with so much on the line for all three clubs.

This may mean that Leeds may be forced to play some of their remaining home games well away from Elland Road including the last game of the season against Charlton which may be switched to a London ground to put distance between the fans and the game itself. Surely, with Elland Road Police Station just around the corner, Leeds Utd and WYP are best placed to deal with the matter?

Could Champions League winner be on his way to Elland Road?

Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo could be on his way to Elland Road this Summer according to Chilean media. The 37 year o joined the blue side of Manchester in 2016 in a deal worth 17m, however due to age, would be available at a cut price £1m. Bielsa has a long standing admiration for the Chilean International who has 123 caps to his name, as well as winning the Premier League, EFL Cup, La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Champions League. His current salary at the Etihad is £80,000 per week, and although that would not be beyond the realms of possibility if the Whites gain promotion to the top flight, it would certainly make a dent in their wage structure.

Where does this leave Meslier. The French U20 International is expected to join the Whites this Summer in a 5m deal. In the few appearances the youngster has made between the sticks, he has impressed but is he ready for the Premier League. If not, should be be splashing out 5m for a hopeful star for the future!

Wolves have already informed Leeds that 33 year old shot stopper John Ruddy will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season, as will Joe Hart from Burnley and more than likely Fraser Forster from the Saints. Although banned until the last game of the season against Charlton, the 33yo has returned to training at Elland Road, though it is expected that the 33yo will be playing his domestic football in his native Spain next season.

It just baffles me that they think that by playing matches at a neutral venue they think fans will simply stay at home for the day.

If for example Liverpool are playing in a match that could seal the title they could play the match on the moon and it would make no difference. What will happen by not playing the match there?

If the match was played at Anfield then fans turning up during the game wouldn't be able to get into the stadium, wouldn't be able to soak in any atmosphere as they would have to be watching the match on their mobile phones, there wouldn't be big screens up, nobody selling beer etc. They wouldn't hear cheers from inside the stadium if a goal was scored. So regardless of where the match was played the fans would be congregating not at the stadium but in their houses, likely having family and friends round, drinking beer and watching the footy. If Liverpool wins then thousands would be out on the streets of Liverpool celebrating the end of 30 years of hurt. Thousands will flock to Anfield to celebrate with other Liverpool fans - but it would happen after the match regardless of where the match was played not during the match.

If the match isn't played at Anfield then chances are the same amount of fans that would have decided to go along with their phones to watch the match outside the stadium, if Liverpool were at home, would still go along as it matters not that the match is being played in the stadium or elsewhere as they wouldn't be able to get into the stadium. Fans would turn up there regardless simply because they want to be with other fans to celebrate and be as one. It is like when fans flock to the stadium to watch an away match that they are showing on a big screen, fans aren't going there because they can't watch the match on their tv at home they are going because they want to be with other fans of the same team.

Playing the match at a neutral venue will make absolutely no difference to whether fans congregate or not.

Morning Weasel, do you remember 30 years ago, last game of the season Leeds went to Bournemouth in their droves. Only a small portion of those fans had tickets but it didn't stop thousands on turning up and unfortunately causing havoc...

I wonder if during these unprecedented times, will MB rotate more?

I know he hates rotation, doesnt believe in tiredness etc.

But 9 games in just over a month during the summer when temperatures are already mid 20s now and without a pre season.

Surely even MB cant think we can go on as usual playing the same players every game with minimal subs every 3 days or so?

Great point - lets not forget the opposition can make 5 changes, and you're only allowed to make changes during three set intervals.

If the opposition suddenly replace half their team, it could change the match.

Bielsa does not like change....

Indeed. Trouble wasn't at the game it was before and mainly after. I would have imagined that on that night lots of fans gathered at ER to celebrate, same as in 1992. Neither time did we win the titles at ER but that is where the celebrations will be regardless of where the match is.

Bielsa knows his best XI.

Bielsa has his players as fit as a butchers dog.

Bielsa doesn't make unnecessary changes as he knows it weakens & disrupts our pattern of play.

We are top of the league with Bielsa's tactics & the non-use of not too many substitutions

Unprecedented times though and we've had some dire runs under MB to.

Systems everything but we cant afford 3 4 5 games of no wins while we wait for the system to click either.

2 games is all it would take, 7 points becomes 1 point to 3rd and we've had poor runs of far longer then 2 games.

Personally i think a game every 4 days for over a month in scorching heat is to much for any 11 players no matter how fit.

Just my view.

He doesnt, find that worrying in a mini season like what we got now.

System over everything is the MB way but points matter most of all at this stage.

Be interesting anyway

I see your point playing the last nine games in hot temperatures CJay

However this is the norm in the championship :

We played 8 games in 27 days during December/first week January

We played 8 games in 35 days prior to lockdown

Plus

We generally start our season very well under Bielsa's management, we tend to play well in the August/September sunshine too!

You could say if we start well & I have no reasons to think otherwise, we beat Cardiff & Fulham then the cottagers would be on the back-foot playing catch-up in similar conditions to ourselves!

Uncharted territories when you can make 5 changes all at once...

Sometimes one substitution can change a game. Making 5 at once will make a massive impact.

There is no way that Hernandez can play 9 games in a month. 5 at very most. Damn shame Forshaw is not back. I wonder whether Shackleton will get a proper run out?

Making changes can turn a match either way. When I was a player manager there be games where I wouldn't make a change because it was a) bringing a weaker player on - assuming you'd picked your strongest 11 to start and b) the player could take a while to get into the tempo of the match - a bit like pontoon you can stick or twist, sometimes you twist and it makes your hand better, sometimes you bust.

People just seem to think that bringing a sub on that that player will suddenly perform to his best from the first second he is on the pitch. Making 5 subs all at once is the sort of thing you do in friendly matches where the pace of the game isn't 100%.

Ideal scenario is to be 4-0 up and then ease off and bring the subs on and cling on for 4-3 win.

Are QPR retarded? When are they expecting us to start, September? For the last few weeks the league has been saying they want to finish before the end of July so it is completely unproffessionla of QPR if they didn't expect it to start on the 20th or at the very latest the week after. Woodgate summed it up when he said that although they'd not had official confirmation they expected it to be the 20th and were working towards that. I bet if the league had suddenly said we were playing this Saturday that Leeds would be ready and all we are working on now at training is more of the finishing touches and technique rather than having to get fit.

I suspect Marcelo is still having nightmares about that Cardiff game at ER

Three substitutions in seven minutes & we fell apart

That was what I meant last week when I mentioned squad fitness, No doubt Leeds player will be fit for game one, but it is the rapid turnover of games that is a worry.

Neither having larger squads and being allowed more subs will impact on Bielsas approach imo.
