Re: Annus Horribilis - Jack Charlton
Hot on the heels of Norman another huge loss for Leeds.
Not only a giant on the pitch (in stature as well as service to Leeds) but a tremendous character, the likes of which is sadly lacking in football these days.
Back in 1990 I was lucky enough to get over to Italy for the World Cup and ended up watching the England V Ireland match in a bar in a small coastal town called Camogli (just down the coastline from Genoa). The place was rafted with Irish and Scottish (as Scotland had played in Genoa) and I was one of only two England fans in the whole place. Those Irish fans absolutely worshipped Jack Charlton with a seemingly divine reverence - so I always think the fact I was a Leeds fan and therefore had strong ties to Jack saved me getting more abuse than I would have otherwise received that afternoon. Cheers Jack
Nice old clip with some stories of Jack from Billy and John Charles.

This one has hit me hard too 64, few years and sniffles this morning and feel like I've been locked in the stomach.
We forget at times how much love we've poured in to our heroes and this brings it all back to me - kicking a ball about and aspiring to be Lorimer, Giles, Clarke and all the rest of our legendary sides.

Just got in from work and heard the news
Someone posted a pic of Jack and Norman together with the caption :
Reunited
I really welled up, I’m not usually like that
RIP Jack

A minute of silence in Jack's memory before PL games today.
It's only right.

Absolutely correct Billysboots! The sad news of Jack’s death matters so much to all Leeds fans and because he was an English World Cup winner, but it is headline news here in Ireland and there is real sadness all over the country that the man who brought us to our first senior international tournament, and to others afterwards, has passed away.billysboots wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 9:23 am The U.K. based fans probably don’t realise what a legend Jack is over here in Ireland, himself and his wife Pat were made honorary citizens back in the 90’s.
RIP big Jack.
I
Those Euro’s in 1988 changed “soccer” in Ireland forever. It was a real minority sport up to then but he changed that through the success he achieved then and especially getting to the quarter finals in the World Cup in Italy in’90. Beating England in ‘88 really set the band wagon going.
I doubt he ever again had to put his hand in his pocket in Ireland for anything he wanted after those great days. He was made an honorary Irishman and fished most rivers in the country for many years afterwards.
A sad loss all round - thanks for all the memories - RIP Jack.

Mate told of Big Jack's regular jaunts through Ireland..north ,or south whenever he entered any where he'd put up the round..

A customer told me at work this morning. Sad that he's gone, but happy he's at rest now after rumours of him being unwell for sometime. 773 games says it all a true Leeds United colossus.
Former Republic of Ireland defender Paul McGrath: "Absolutely gutted. Father figure to me for 10 years, thanks for having faith in me. Sleep well Jack, Love ya. Broken heart."
Great to hear Paul say that. He had his own demons with the bottle.
I think someone, somewhere is building a solid back four.

Much love for posting this. I hadn't seen it before, but just shows the affection for each other in that great team. Two giants in the history of the city of Leeds, sadly lost.Muppet the Cat wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 12:46 pm

Re: Annus Horribilis - Jack Charlton
Love the bit at the end. When John Charles says Jack would dribble the ball out, lose possession and if the other team scored, Jack would blame the goalie for not saving it.
