Leeds United v Barnsley - MATCH THREAD

Post by Ellandback1 »

Leeds United v Barnsley FC

Thursday 16th July at 17.00 pm | Elland Road

Top of the Championship Leeds entertain relegation threatened Barnsley on Thursday tea time, as the Whites look to move within a point of automatic Promotion. The Tykes are not going to make life easy for Bielsa's men - not only is it a local derby, but Barnsley, who are fighting for their lives, have only lost once since the season restarted and have picked up valuable wins against QPR and Blackburn in recent games.

Leeds have been dealt a major blow after it was revealed that Kalvin Phillips is likely to miss the rest of the season. Phillips played the second half of Sunday’s win at Swansea City with heavy strapping on his left leg, and was expected to be fit for Barnsley's visit, However, Bielsa has now confirmed, in his pre match press conference that he has not recovered in time! Ben White is expected to deputise. The 24 year old defensive midfielder has been instrumental in ensuring the Whites have kept twenty clean sheets so far this term, four more than their closest rivals Fulham. With White stepping into Phillips shoes, we can expect to see crowd favourite Gaetano Berardi partner Liam Cooper at centre back.

Kiko Casilla's is once again, available for selection. The former Real Madrid shot stopper was given an eight game ban after an FA investigation found him guilty of using racist language towards Charlton loanee Jonathan Leko. However, the Spaniard will likely have to make do with a place on the bench as 20 year old Illan Meslier has impressed between the sticks and made the number one jersey his own.

Leeds Starting XI
Meslier, Ayling, Berardi, Cooper, Dallas, White, Klich, Harrison, Costa, Roberts, Bamford

Subs: Casillia, Casey, Douglas, Struijk, Stevens, Shackleton, Alioski, Poveda, Hernandez

Can't wait for this game. Booked the day off work, just in case I need to start drinking straight after the Brentford game.

We'll be just fine without Phillips for now, this is where Bielsa's system comes into its own. White has proven himself more than capable in that position. Would just be a shame if our lad Kalvin couldn't play in the game that takes us up.

Not going to touch the Kiko trial thing but Messi is our keeper as far as I'm concerned. He's earned it.

I really hope casilla dosnt come back in, there is still plenty of time for him to ruin the party. Looking at it with bielsa tinted specs on he is our most experienced keeper and he never blamed him for any of the gaffs in the past so why wouldn't he bring him back in. I'm not sure I can bear to watch if his name is on the team sheet.

Totally agree!

Surely Bielsa will not even think about changing keeper. By chance, my son was watching the highlights of our epic away game V Birmingham this evening on YouTube. To see Kasilla’s headless running around the box again was shocking now that we’ve gotten used to a steady performer in Meslier. No change here please or we will pay for it.

It’s such a pity to lose Philips at this stage. White won’t let us down, Berardi I’d be less sure of. I think everyone will up their game because of KP’s absence and this should get us the points we need. A few prayers should also help!

It would totally go against Bielsa if kiko was brought back in and he c**ks up costing us promotion. Can't see Bielsa doing that, he'd be dangling himself over the trap door. We have looked much more secure on opposition set pieces and crosses into our box. His extra height gives us much more of an advantage. Don't be tempted MB !

Would be nice to see Kalvin be part of the promotion when it happens on the last day or at Derby,He was part of the success of the team being where we are (along with the others of course) hope all goes well.

After three days of complacency, enjoyimg readimg about all matters Leeds, not even being too concerned about stories about KPs injury or Kikos possible return.

I have to confess that Thursday Night has Wigan written all over it.( in my mind anyway)

Brentford are like that cop in Terminator 2. They just wont give up.
Until someone tips Benrahma and co into a molten vat of metal I wont be able to relax.

Maybe Preston can do a John O'Connor tonight...

I would be tempted to put Douglas in at left back and move the utility man Dallas
Into the defensive midfielder role. He could do a Kalvin. And leave Ben White in the back four
Where he has been outstanding all season.

Douglas for his passing, free kicks and corners.
Dallas for his pace and because Bielsa has faith to play him all over the pitch.
White because he is the rock on which our defence is built.

With the use of 5 subs it is best to bring Pablo on after half time when Barnsley are
Getting tired, that is when he can work his magic.

Forget about Kiko... we don't even know if he is match fit, and illan has been doing
ever so well on a regular basis and has kept a few clean sheets of late.

I'd go along with that RR but I'd like to think that it doesn't matter who we put out against Barnsley we should be very comfortable. Stoke put 4 past them I'm sure we can more than match it plus Barnsley need wins to stay up so hopefully we won't have to get past any buses.

That's what I'd do, and I think Bielsa will do too.

Expect us to go three at the back to negate Barnsley playing two up front.

The only question in my mind is who lines up along side White and Cooper. Berra or Ayling.
I would like to see Douglas play ahead of Ali as we will need to defend tonight. Plus Douglas can step in for our corner and FC specialist

Can only see Cooper, Berra at the back and White as DM myself. Wouldn't mind seeing Douglas at LB but I think Dallas will stay there with Douglas coming on as a defensive option if we need to see out the game in the second half.

Pablo to come on HT and score a hat trick.

It's not sinking in how close we are. By 7pm tonight we could virtually have done it. Biggest game in my 17 years following the club. Love you all. Come on boys!

I’ve noticed that so far in this mini season we haven’t had any really bad refereeing decisions go against us and being Leeds you can always expect at least one or two in a run of 9 games. But barring that, top at home against bottom, what could possibly go wrong?

Yes Moth it would be unlikely for Bielsa to make more than one change.

I remember when we took Dallas out of our defence we conceded goals at will, also I didn't think Dallas was as effective as White in the DM role. Berardi is good back-up when either White or Cooper are unavailable.

So much noise around the club right now and we haven't won anything yet. Have to put it all aside, focus, and put this one away. Get those three points!
