Would of/would've

Post by Norm »

Please forgive me for this post.

It's not my place to be an English Language teacher, but I thought I would make a point.

The contraction "would've" sounds like "would of" but actually comes from the term "would have".

I'm not having a go at anybody because I doubt English Language has been taught properly for the last 30 years, so it's nobody's fault.

Just thought I'd make a comment because your next job application could depend on just such a grammatical point.

Please believe me folks, absolutely no offence intended.

I was always taught to say 'would have' and that 'would of' was deffinately not a correct use of grammar

That's something that irritates me. I once picked up an English school teacher on it. She wasn't happy. You would of thought she would have been grateful to have been shown the error of her ways! (Yes I know - it was deliberate).

Ahh the spirit of Ernie Wise
I wanted to flash this watch, I flash it all the time. It's my antique pocket watch and it makes me look British...and I need that for my analysis. It is a gorgeous gold pocket watch however and I'm very proud of it. You see my grandfather, on his death bed, ..sold me this watch!

I wish people would not mistakenly use the term "Premiership", instead of "Premier League".
Premiership applies to the Scottish league, or Rugby Union.

Cheers for this Norm, it all makes sense why I've been getting all those job knockbacks. I was starting to take it personally, this brings me some comfort at least.
