The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Wednesday 12th August) - Leeds cool interest in Wilson, as Benrahma identified as top target

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Wednesday 12th August, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Mixed News on Leeds pursuit of River Plate Duo

Leeds are locked in negotiations with Argentinian outfit River Plate regarding Gonzalo Montiel and Lucas Martinez Quarta.

Highly rated centre back Quarta 24 year old, is 6ft tall, very skillful for a centre back and has two caps for his Country. He is in the final year of his contract, but still has a release clause of 18m.

Similarly, Montiel is a 23 year old defender, albeit an attacking right wing back. He's 5ft 9', pacy and has a a great cross on him.

Leeds were hoping to secure a deal for the duo for under 20m due to River Plates financial problems. However, it seems their plight is not as bad as first feared, and have told Leeds they only need to sell one of their assets!

Originally the Whites were hoping they'd be able to secure the services of Lucas Martinez Quarta for between £10-12m and Montiel for between £5-6m.

Whether or not Leeds are able to land both players, they will continue their pursuit of Ben White. The Daily Star have revealed that they are ready to increase their offer for the 22yo for a third time. So far, the seaside club have rejected offers at £18.5 and £22m. The next offer is believed to be in excess of £25m.

Leeds cool interest in Wilson, as Benrahma identified as top target

Leeds have cooled their interest in Harry Wilson, and have instead pinned their hopes of bringing Algerian International Said Benrahma to Elland Road. Wilson enjoyed a successful loan period with Bournemouth last term netting seven times in 20 appearances, yet Bielsa has made the Brentford number 10 his top priority.

If Leeds are to land the 25 year old, they will have to fend off interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and Villa. Benrahma netted 17 times last term, and was credited with nine assists. Bielsa see's the 25 year old as an ideal replacement for Hernandez.

Capturing a natural goalscorer would certainly take the pressure off Bamford, if he remains first choice striker.

Brentford had initially wanted their £25m, but could settle for closer to 15m knowing that they will still earn huge profit from the £2.7million it cost to sign him from Nice in 2018.

Recession announced. How will that effect Leeds?

Britain is officially in recession. The coronavirus pandemic has plunged the country into the deepest slump on record. The Office for National Statistics said gross domestic product (GDP), the broadest measure of economic prosperity, fell in the three months to the end of June by 20.4% – the biggest quarterly decline since comparable records began in 1955.

What kind of impact will that have on football clubs, in particular Leeds Utd? Whilst its nice to be bidding for some of the best players in the World, is it wise to do so in today's financial climate?

Will players values drop? Should Leeds wait and pick up some bargains?

Morning all...

We need to drop the Ben White interest and walk away, it seems like he is the corkscrew in the bottle as far as signings go, like we’re afraid to spend on anyone else as we don’t know what White is going to cost.

Throw into that other teams watching us, imagine you’re Brentford, you think White is worth around £15m to £20m and you see Leeds pay £30m, you’d start rubbing your hands together when they enquire about Benrahma.

We need to walk away from White and let everyone know we won’t be held to ransom.

With Berardi injured Foyth plus one of the others we’re interested in offers far better value.

Morning EB et all, hope you are all having a great week

The River Plate deal doesn’t seem to be going away so I’m hoping we get at least the lad at CB over the line as he seems to be a top prospect.

I’m worried that if we don’t get some/all of these deals over the line soon the players won’t be able to get their fitness up to the level expected at Leeds these days so we may not see them in the first half of the new season so come on Victor get the deals done MOT

Even I, as one of Ben White’s biggest fans, think that paying any more than £20m for him is too much, we need to walk away and start to concentrate our efforts elsewhere, especially now that we are on the cusp of a recession.

Benrahma for £15m would be decent business but I think we shouldn’t be tempted to pay any more.

I have said it before i think £25m should be our final offer. Ben has turned down a new contract at Brighton and if he doesn't play much this season, his value will drop significantly with only 1 year left on his contract. He will have the option to move on a free tranfer in 2 years time. On the other side of the coin, i don't think he cost Brighton much and if they guarantee him FTF he will haver to get his head down and become a good player for them.

Wonder if letting it be known we are after the Argentinian centre back is a ploy to show Brighton we won't be held to ransom for White?

Ben signed a one year extension before he went to leave. His contract will run out Summer of 2023.

None of us know what's going on behind the scenes, we may already have dropped our interest in Ben White & concentrating our efforts in other avenues.

We need to act fast as everybody knows Bielsa likes to work with his squad for at least a month.

God help us if the fixture list is cruel to us & we have to face three or four of the top six in our opening matches playing with a championship side

That's what Liverpool did. Norwich thought they were going to get silly money for Lewis, Liverpool went out and bought Tsimikas instead. We should go in for Martinez Quarta and Harwood-Bellis.

Glad we're not in for Harry Wilson, no improvement on what we have already and a complete waste of money. Not a PL level player.

£15m for Benrahma seems reasonable, not £25m. What Brentford don't realise, is they won't have a source of income, so they won't be able to hold clubs to ransom this summer.

Guarantee we will get the top 6 in our first 6 games. But I believe we will beat at least one of them, if not 2.

Not sure a recession (created by the C19) is going to have too much impact on football tbh.

Many top clubs, especially their multi millionaire and Billionaire owners will still recognise there's money to made from football in the respective future competitions, and they still need to plan and prepare for them. If they push prices up on players chances are they'll lose out on selling a few to gain some much needed cash, if they drop prices (by however much) they're likely to bring in cash to finance to buy, or help in buying any players they are interested in, it's going to depend on how owners look at the recession.

Some businesses will up prices, other businesses will drop prices to help keep cash flow turning over thus allowing them to buy more stock to keep the business operating, even if it's slightly lower standard stock.

Only impact we may see in football is at the turnstiles once fans are allowed back in, then again, fans have been starved of watching their teams for so long I think it may increase crowds for many teams for the first 4 to 7 games, then we may see how a recession hit's fans wallets.

Can't see the recession having too much of an impact on Leeds fan though, maybe away games, but not so much home games for all teams.

Heard we had bid 30 million for white which was rejected i personally think is silly money and if its true that should be the end of that. Let them keep a disgruntled player, he is a professional so i am sure he will want to do well where ever he is but must be a disappointment tasting life with leeds to have to go back there. we have seen with cooper bielsa can turn previously average players in to good ones so there is no need to spend 30 million. We should look to foyth or john stones- both players with prem experience.

If White is worth £30m+ then so is Cooper. How can one be worth far more than the other?

Agreed. Our lads are pushed abnormally hard during preseason which lets them get off to an explosive start.

Morning Lover, unfortunately it all has a knock on effect. I guarantee you if will really effect the housing market. Its had a devastating effect on the millions of sole traders, plus the millions who will be made redundant. What happens when half the sky sports subscribers cancel their membership?

Spending too big is probably going to hurt in the long run. With no crowds, revenue is going to drop. Sponsors as a whole are hurting from this pandemic and their budgets will drop too. L1 and L2 brought in salary caps, and I expect FFP to get stricter as a result of all this. If we spend heavily on transfers now we could be faced with reduced values a year or two from now. E.g. Spend 30m on Ben White today and the market might only value the same player at 10m a year from now. We have to be judicious about this.

Which brings up the White debate. Great player, well-drilled, perfect fit. But the fee is just getting too high. I like Quarta if Bielsa likes Quarta. Much cheaper. I'm sure Bielsa has a few players on his list, who while not drilled as well as White, would only cost us half the money.

20m for one player, 30m for another. We have to be careful here. Risdale should have taught us a valuable lesson. And the uncertainty in the market now is scary. Spend wisely. Our objective next year is mid-table safety, building something sustainable, not charging straight for the Champions League.
