Raphinha’s Goal Celebration
Firstly, I think he’s a genius on the ball, key to us crawling out of trouble and as long as he keeps scoring we will all be thrilled with him. But I was Just wondering if anyone else thought his goal celebration on Sunday was a bit strange and disconnected from his teammates and the fans?
I also thought it was a really silly way to pick up a yellow card so early in a game. Most players just lift their jersey if they do have a message they want to get across, unless it is really personal. Maybe this was but I didn’t hear that it was.
Maybe I’m on my own in this. I haven’t seen any other comments about it.

It was for Marília Mendonca who died in a plane crash recently.
Huge star in Brazil apparently.
Neymar did the same sort of tribute to.
Nothing to worry about.

Re: Raphinha’s Goal Celebration
I can’t see any good reason why taking off your shirt to celebrate a goal is automatically a yellow card offence. It’s an exuberant way to celebrate admittedly but you do feel excited when you score so what is wrong with a bit of exuberance. As I understand it, it is a directive from the FA but why, what is the actual reason why taking your shirt off should merit a booking? What happens if a player wants to take his shirt off temporarily to cool down a bit when there is a break in play, would that be a booking too?

You never, never, see it happening in women's football maybe they have more control of their emotions when they score.

Re: Raphinha’s Goal Celebration
It's such a strange thing that seems to afflict male footballers, the need to tear off their shirt to celebrate. I never see it in other areas, even if someone is going through a moment of election - "my wife just gave birth so I tore my top off", "I got promoted at work so I ripped off my shirt and threw it on the ground". I think I might be of the generation that thinks just keep it on.
Re: Raphinha’s Goal Celebration
They are appealing to their base. The ones that run around town on a Saturday night swinging their shirts above the head. Its the only working class connection left in the mega rich game.
Re: Raphinha
He's got all the tricks, flicks you would expect from a Brazilian superstar, but its the work ethic of the old Yorkshire pit pony that i admire most about him. That comes from a different place altogether.
Re: Raphinha
If Bielsa was that good he'd clone Rapha a few times and put them across the front 3-4 .

I love the guy but it is really really dumb/irresponsible to voluntarily get yourself yellow carded with 75% of the game remaining.
Re: Raphinha’s Goal Celebration
I wouldn't see it as working class.
More that whole Insta obsessed gym going tattoo sporting selfie taking narcissistic millennial class.

Re: Raphinha’s Goal Celebration
I don’t think you can compare say being promoted at work to the instant, unbridled thrill, ecstasy even, of scoring a goal in front 36000 adoring and raucous fans and I wouldn’t be patronising enough to dismiss it as a manifestation of a particular section of our society either. But that aside I still can’t see the reason for it being an automatic booking! It doesn’t waste any more time than any other goal celebration, it wouldn’t particularly offend anyone (although you never know these days), so why?
Genuine question btw, if there are any Referees out there who know the specific reason I would be grateful to have it explained.
