Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Tuesday 20th October) Cruel deflection costs Whites three points

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. Its Tuesday 20th October, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Leeds slip to defeat against Wolves

A cruel deflection from Kalvin Phillips from Raul Jimenez’s shot twenty minutes from time was enough to separate Marcelo Bielsa and Nuno Espírito Santo's two sides, and inflict Leeds first home defeat of the season. Phillips was not to know that Jimenez's tame shot was covered by Meslier as he tried to head the ball across the goal for a corner. Unfortunately the change of direction completely wrong footed the French youngster and the ball ended up i the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Did Leeds deserve anything from the game? Debatable! Leeds has the lions share of the first half, but were unable to test Rui Patricio until the 40th minute. Wolves not only controlled large periods of the second half, but were looking more clinical in front of goal. They were unfortunate not to have taken the lead eight minutes into the second half. Romain Saiss wonder goal from the edge of the box was chalked off due to one of their players being millimetres offside during the build up!

Even the second half emergence of Hernandez and Raphinha did little to help the Leeds Utd cause. As expected when Leeds lose, the boo boys on social media decide to pint the finger. This week the finger has been pointed at both Phillips and Bamford. Bamford, for not creating any clear cut chances and Phillips for being off form, caused by having to play a different role for England than he does for Leeds.

Bielsa post match Interview

Marcelo Bielsa speaking to BBC's MOTD...

It was a disputed game. We dominated and created enough chances to go ahead. There were a lot of duels and friction. It was hard to play.

We also had the whole of the second half to try to win the game. In the second half we weren't able to attack as much. In the first half we should have established a difference, in the second half it was more even. We had the sensation that we could unbalance them. We created enough opportunities to establish a lead.

I don't think they were better than us but they neutralised our game better. The game was very hard, very physical and there was a lot of interruptions. Every game you have opportunities to generate corrections.

Wolves Manager Nuno Espirito Santo...

It was a good performance with some aspects to improve. We were better in the second half, but at the start it was very difficult for us. They broke us, created chances, they were so dynamic. We had to adjust and be more clinical in front. The goal was fortunate but we had chances.

There was a proposal from Arsene Wenger for daylight for offsides, VAR is fine margins and we want them to make good decisions. It is a challenge for referees to improve, to be better, be faster and let the game flow. Nobody likes to celebrate and then come back. VAR can go both ways, let's try to help and make things better together.

Lineker slams 'mind-numbingly life-sapping VAR

Former England legend, now pundit Gary Lineker has slammed VAR for over analysing every goal to the nearest millimetre, saying its quashing our enjoyment! His tweet came after Wolves had a wonder strike chalked off last night after frame by frame VAR footage showed a Wolves player to be millimetres offside during the build up to the play!

Whilst Saiss’ stunning goal was possibly a few millimetres offside, I think it’s a real shame that this is where we are now. With VAR level is no longer onside and it’s a mind-numbingly life-sapping experience waiting for this dubious technology to quash our enjoyment. Is VAR ruining your enjoyment?

Morning EB et all

Gutted is how I feel this morning we could/should have won that game in the first half by far the best team just did not score and how many times have we seen this happen over the last two seasons but Bielsa will make it right and by the end of the season we'll be happy with our 6th place finish ;-)

Kalvin was excellent in the first half showing Southgate how to get the best out of him, not sure if it was the Internationals, the late night game or what but he definitely went off the boil in the second as did many in the team. I'm a big supporter of his having seen him play since he was about 14 - Wortley boys and Farnley school but he should have been pulled part way into the second half

Bambi it may have been noticed I'm not his biggest fan ;-) but give the lad a break he got absolutely no service last night, the one real chance he had he took it really well and we'd have been 1-0 up if it wasn't for some poor assistant reffing

It's one game that we lost, 5 Games 2 wins, a draw and two losses who would have given us that before the start, when you look at who we've played, lets move on to the Villains and give them a good old tonking MOT

Morning Folks,

At best our performance merited a point last night, but Wolves had their game plan, stuck to it and most importantly had the quality to make it work. They were knocking hard for a goal and once they scored it could sit back and choke us out.

Phillips ended up at CB when Struijk was subbed which didnt help our cause either but it was Bielsas only way of allowing Pablo into the game while keeping our front line playing.

The thing with Bamford is that he is good at executing the press, hassling the CBs. However there are games( of which we saw plenty last season too) where they opposition has already conceded territory to us, and somethong else is needed. On one through ball he did look pretty slow. But he serves his purpose. Overall just a bad night at the office for Leeds.

VAR agree with Lineker, the parameters nerd to change for it to serve its purpose.

We attacked for 65 minutes they defended resolutely for 65 minutes. They tried to attack for 25 minutes but instead of defending resolutely we still tried to carry on attacking and, as we know, they managed to score (due to a misplaced pass, a slip and a cruel deflection). I thought we were probably the better team on the night and certainly deserved at least a draw so I’m not too disheartened.

Daylight for offsides is an interesting idea except that you are still going to have goals chalked off due to offside decisions made by the millimetre.

Can’t stand Lineker, the overpaid, arrogant, pretentious, condescending, patronising, egotistical, odious, woke minded d!ckhead, and not interesting in anything he has to say. If someone is offside, whether by a metre or a millimetre he is offside, and seeing as though we now have the technology we might as well use it. The other uses of VAR, such as ball to hand or hand to ball etc. can still be questionable as these are still decided by human beings.

Lineker slams 'mind-numbingly life-sapping VAR

Totally agree, life sapping is a good term for VAR... Here is a suggestion...maybe VAR should be used for the officials... to call only their mistakes, the linesman are there to assist the referee... if 3 of them cannot keep up and miss glaringly obvious fouls, offside's etc..., (the linesmen are supposed to be level with play) then lets have a 4th official... a ref for both halves of the pitch...cannot be any worse than VAR...this MM stuff is ridiculous.... Since VAR when was the last time you saw a ref consult with a linesman?... doesnt happen anymore.

Unfortunate loss in a good game where we were better for the most of it. Felt like being back in the Championship. No bother, on to the next game.

In this system just about any striker could do that, Roofe did it better to start with and Roberts is good at it too...It's not a difficult skill to learn.

offside is still questionable - how do you judge the exact moment the ball leaves the player making the pass? how do you judge exactly where a legal body part begins and ends. Player's are being held offside by an armpit when I imagine if you'd drawn back the play a fraction of a second his armpit would probably have been onside.

Should be a common sense approach...does he look offside on first glance? no/not sure - don't take a further look, yes - take a further look. Tbh I didn't see the close up VAR of wolves' offside yesterday but he looked off on the replays to me at first glance.

Exactly - you could train any 16 year old school player to do it just about as effectively. It's made out to be a special skill, but for a striker it just means harrying their keeper and defenders and denying them space on the ball.

VAR is not absolutely infallible, of course, where offsides are concerned, but with film running at is it 30 or even 60 frames per second? it is going to be accurate enough in my opinion. Certainly a lot more accurate than the human eye. The worst thing in football is to feel cheated when a goal has been given or not given due to a very obvious mistake (or bias decision) by the ref or linesmen, and Leeds, probably more than most over the years, have been on the wrong end of such decisions.

Another incident where VAR perhaps should have intervened last night towards the end of the game, but didn’t, was when Jimenez (I think) kicked out at Koch after, to be fair, a clumsy tackle. The fact that the kick didn’t connect or at least didn’t hurt Koch was probably the reason that the Referee didn’t see it but it was obvious on the replays that the intent was there, I’ve seen players sent off for less.
