1970’s ESSO football badges/coins/Squelchers

Post by Muppet the Cat »

Does anyone else have and/or remember the sets of footie related badge/coins/Squelcher booklet collections that ESSO brought out in the 1970’s.

Collected as. Kid and recently unearthed in our loft :)

I’ve still got all that stuff . I’ve even got two complete sets of the Mexico 70 ESSO coins ( one on the blue board that you had to send away for and the other in the freebie red gatefold paper holder ) . Really happy memories of collecting when I was growing up .

Ha... We used to have a coin operated gas meter. Those Esso coins worked a treat.

Remember collecting the coins from World Cup 90. Had one with Peter Beardsley on, think that made it worth less than the scrap value if the metal!

I had some stickers in the early 70s, which is why I supported Leeds. Can't remember what they were... think there was a blue gatefold thing you stuck badges on.

Can't even remember why I had it. It probably came from the church jumble, or something, because I wouldn't normally have been given stuff like that.
If I go insane will you still let me join in with the game?

Like this one Billie. I’ve also got the red thinner card one somewhere. Trouble was with that one that every time you picked it up some of the coins would fall out of the slots - probably by design so your Dad would buy you the thicker blue card one.

Somewhere I’ve got the dark blue gatefold club badges (most of, if not all, which will have changed by now) set.

My brother used to collect the Esso coins, no idea what happened to them.
I collected the football sticker books from 1975 onwards until 1980, they're all complete and I still have them all.
They're going for quite a bit of money on eBay.

Yes , that’s the one ! And the red one was a nightmare , mine was held together with sellotape in the end . I remember having to wait weeks to complete the set because I couldn’t get Colin Harvey . And no one else I knew had him so a swop was impossible . When he finally turned up I was ecstatic ! I ended up with so many spares I started a second collection .

I also collected Joe Mercer’s GB football squad plastic heads and got my Dad to switch from his usual ESSO garage and go to Cleveland Petrol who were running the promotion . I remember completing that relatively easily . Leeds had Bremner and Cooper in that set . That’s the one set I seem to have lost over the years unfortunately ( £150 on eBay now ) .

I had that set . Leeds were the gold 100 years medal/coin . Have no idea where it is now or if I still have any bits of it lying around . Pity really .

This memorabilia and nostalgia stuff really got me thinking . Just sent off for 2 Rothmans yearbooks ( 73/74 & 74/75 ) . Now , can anyone remember who other than Rothmans did season reviews .....I used to have a 69/70 one , not note or Rothmans , it was paperback book but more magazine and article based . Who did these sort of things back then ? I'm trying to rediscover it , I think if I saw a cover I'd remember it . Wasn't Shoot or that sort of thing .

Nor me , just hoping I may have hidden in a box somewhere . Certainly wasn't Rothmans type format , more articles . It had the FA cup run in full all-rounder , a colour photo of Leeds-Sutton , but I can't remember who did those sort of season reviews back then .
Those coin things by the way are well available on eBay .
