Real ales take some beating. But I also have to abstain from beer these days to keep the gout away.
Single malts are awesome.
I tend to mainly drink wine or rakiya.
Homemade rakiya is a beautiful, pure drink
I get gout but don't refrain from drinking, it's not the beer it's the dehydration.
Pint of water before and plenty of fruit (plus take vitamin c tablets)
Hobgoblin tonight just the pint and now about to share bottle of red with the Mrs.
I'm a bit late to this thread but that's probably the story of my life.
Gout - I woke up one morning in 1982 when I lived in Ilford, with my left big toe base joint swollen and red. As agonising as it was I walked to the nearby emergency room (we didn't have a car then, couldn't get a cab and it was too far to the doctor's office), where I was diagnosed with gout (excess uric acid not properly processed by some bodily defect) and was given Indomethacin for the pain and Allopurinol for the condition. Later I got the herbal kick and started taking unsweetened black cherry juice and celery seed extract, which seemed to do the trick.
I don't get gout very often these days but have had it over the years in several joints, usually after a little over-indulgence - not necessarily from alcohol because turkey and red meat contain purines too and can cause gout, believe it or not.
Anyway, real ale would be my favourite kind of alcohol but the beer-desert where I live means I have to make do and I choose Stella Artois because it's convenient and it's the Belgian stuff, but there's one beer I do like when I can get it - "Sierra Nevada" which is brewed by a company of the same name in California and/or North Carolina. We first tried the beer when we were in Washington DC in 1984 and we had to decant it then because it was bottled real ale. Now it's (as CAMRA would say) a bright beer because the finings aren't in the bottom of the bottle but it's still a good beer.
Apart from that I just enjoy my ale in Britain when we come over.
Going on my hols later.
Just a 2hr drive to the North Coast.
I have some Hophouse and a bottle of Pendyren Single Malt.

Been drinking Morretti and Peroni throughout the tournament, due to it not only being nice but always seems to be on offer!! But tonight there’ll be non of the Italian stuff I’ve bought Estrella.
Vodka and lemonade followed by chilled white wine - a client gave me a nice bottle of bubbly on Friday, checked it and apparently it's Italian so that's staying in the fridge tonight!
I'm going back to 505, I saw them at Sheffield and they were amazing.

beer before wine makes you feel fine.... wine before beer makes you feel queer.
serious drinkers go from low alcohol to higher alcohol. if you start off with spirits and high alcohol and come down to beers with low alcohol you will get a massive hangover.
