MB pre Toon press conference

Post by Cjay »

Ten days between games - has that been good, able to hit the reset button and work on certain areas in training?

Given the 10 day period we’ve had it allows us more time to implement the corrections. And also the rest is a factor to consider in this competition.

Team news? Meslier fit again?

Yes Meslier has resolved his health issues.

Any other team news?

No. There is no new news. Koch and Berardi still remain out.

Newcastle - what has changed there since you last met them? Will it be another open game?

All teams have highs and lows. There’s teams who had bigger injury problems and have had to suffer because of covid a lot more than others. And this has an influence in the succession of results and their games.

Transfers - happy with squad or would you welcome another player if Orta bought one to you?

No it’s not contemplated that we’ll bring anyone in and what you mentioned has not happened yet.

I’m happy with the squad we have, I’m comfortable with it and I feel we can finish the season with these players.

Do you think Berardi or Forshaw can be part of the playing squad this season?

Berardi will start to train with the group shortly. While he had a serious knee injury which kept him out for a long time, many have had this in the past and come back to play.

The problem with Forshaw is a little longer. He hasn’t played for over a year now and the medical decisions taken recent make us think he will play again in the not-to-distant future. Forshaw is a professional who looks after his health very much. That’s why I think as soon as these injury problems are resolved I think he will be able to compete very quickly.

With regards to Berardi, his injury coincided with injuries to Koch, Llorente, Cooper and Phillips and we’ve managed to resolve this. And Forshaws has been resolved by Phillips, Kilch, Shackleton and Pascal.

How pleased with new Elland Road pitch? When will you be able to test it out?

The club always makes efforts to help the team in all its necessities. We understand the problem they had to face and we value the effort that they have made for the rest of the winter we can play in a better pitch. We are grateful for this help. Whole I understand the difficulties I don’t see it as a reason for the difficulties we faced in our last game.

Bielsa spoke to the media on Monday morning

Leeds United return to action tomorrow evening when they head north to take on Newcastle United.

Marcelo Bielsa will be hoping that his side can return to winning ways after kicking off 2021 with three consecutive in all competitions as they come up against a Newcastle team that have lost their last five matches.

The Whites head coach faced the media earlier this morning to preview the St James' Park clash and will give a team news update which will include the latest on the likes of Illan Meslier and Diego Llorente.

With a week of the transfer window remaining, expect Leeds' plans for the final days of the January sales to also be addressed.

Follow what he had to say below.

That's all from Bielsa

That’s all for now. Plenty to mull over there from the Leeds boss.

We will have a full transcript coming up shortly.

09:59

Leeds have struggled in the last three Januarys - why is that?

Nothing in particular.

I want to know if this response sufficient in this sense? You’re telling me that in the last three seasons in a particular month the performance levels have dropped in this particular month. So when you ask this I think if there is anything that is reiterated in these periods that indicates why we have lowered our performance.

So I look back and see if anything has happened repeatedly in these three periods and I cannot see anything that has happened repeatedly to give a reason why this has happened. It’s not important just to find similar situations but to find why they happen. Because there is nothing that’s reiterated I cannot give you an answer. For this case I think that each three segmanets should be analysed separately. There’s not a similar motive from my point of view.

09:59KEY EVENT

Will the mental and physical break be beneficial to the team?

The physical performance of Leeds United is available to those who would like to look at them.

The physical performance is judged by looking at four or five different aspects and there are reports that allow you to evaluate it. Before every game Leeds’ physical values are always superior to the opponents. And after every game Leeds’ physical performance still remains higher without exception.

With the added thing that a lot of the teams who face Leeds play their best physical game of the season to that point and we’re also able to be better than them.

That’s why we should listen to all the opinions because we all have the right to be listened to. There is information that is really available to everyone that allows us to verify whether the opinions being made are correct or the wrong ones.

To verify throughout the length of the season whether it’s true that my teams run less or become tired is information that is incorrect that anyone that has an opinion over this aspect can have a look and see they are wrong. There are themes or subjects that you can have an opinion on and there are other subjects which you can measure. And the things you can measure you can see if they are correct or not. And that has nothing to do with the liberty and right to express yourself. The arguments that the person who makes it uses is just a fact of the person who’s writing, ignoring the facts that are there to see.

09:59

Diego Llorente returned to the U23s - how pleasing was that and what attributes will he bring to the first team?

The minutes with the 23s was an aspect that was missing so that he could return with us.

Llorente has the characteristics of a strong defender. He is a player who is happy recovering the ball and he’s the player who has physical attributes who can help in the aerial game and the physical game on the ground.

09:58

Raphinha when he comes in centrally - is that natural or something you've asked him to do

The players who play on the wing play in a limited amount of space different to the players who play in the middle and are able to go both ways. Those who play on the wing play on a longitudinal plane inhibited by the line so there is only one way they can go. The spaces are reduced so they use coming inside as another resource. It’s very effective when done with surprise. If the movements are not done at pace all it does is generate congestion in the middle of the pitch. What the attackers look for are empty spaces. When there is too many players in an around the same position instead of the spaes opening up they close.

And the way to do it by looking for spaces or making runs into spaces where there is space.

09:58

When you go this long without a game is it important to vary the training schedule and do different things?

The training sessions are a resource to incorporate habits and to also correct a few things. In this resource there is a way we can vary it.

09:58

Bruce wants to play with 'gloves off ' - will that allow you to be more dominant?

We have the same objective as them.

09:57

Newcastle again - what did you learn about them from the 5-2 win at Elland Road?

I answered this in a previous question. It’s not so much about the rival but it’s about what we can do and how we can hurt the opponent. Whilst having knowledge of the opponent is something we must take into account because it’s about facing another team and being superior to them we always think that to dominate a match or to disappear is more about us rather than any weakness the opponent has.

Knowing about your rival doesn’t mean you’ll be able to do something about it. It’s not so much about knowing about what you’re going to face, it’s about being superior to them.

09:57

Bamford charity donation - how does that sum him up as a person?

That any player from Leeds makes a contribution to a group of people that are in need for me on a personal level it’s admirable and very respectful that he was able to do this. It’’s very difficult that any profession to arrive at excellence without bringing a human conduct to us.

The way you dominate the things in your profession can make you efficient but to achieve excellence you need to have this human aspect and in football this is multiplied and this is because while football is a collective sport it relies lots on individual qualities. Those who are able to help those in need on a human level can also transfer this to the team.

Newcastle - any improvements in their last couple of games?

We analyse the difficulties of the opponent but of course we worry more about our own difficulties and our difficulties are just as present as theirs.

As in every game we try to improve ourselves as a team. We will try to be better than the opponent in all facets possible.

We’re not focused on their bad run of form, we’re focused on our game and trying to improve our own form.

In no way do we feel their poor run of form will help us regain ours. It’s not a rival’s poor run of form that will help us improve our form, we have to improve on our own.

Agree with that.

Had hoped for the cm we desperately need.

MB already said earlier this month it would be good if we could get new players, as close to a plea as you will get from MB.

Publicly he may say he is happy with the squad but we know he wants a cm hence the Cuisance offer.

Enjoyed that presser, Marcello in combatitive mood.

Loved Marcelo's answer to the Rapha question:

"Those who play on the wing play on a longitudinal plane inhibited by the line so there is only one way they can go." :) :)
