Internationals vs Clubs

Post by Cjay »

The news that players who visit certain countries during the upcoming international fixtures will have to isolated upon their return has infuriated managers.

Pep Guardiola.
Jurgen Klopp

And others have basically said they will ban players from going if that is the case.

Bielsa didn't go that far but did express the need for more guidance.

Very admirable MB but id prefer the Pep/ Klopp approach.

Forget being honourable, if they have to isolate they dont go.

We would he idiots for allowing them to go if they have to isolate, surely we aren't so naive?

Anyway, should we be banning players for playing international football at this stage under the current circumstances?

No, whilst given the current circumstances we might like to stopping players from meeting up with their international team colleagues sends out completely the wrong message IMO and you are just likely to p*ss off international managers/associations, FIFA/UEFA and perhaps more importantly the player/s themselves.

Wouldn’t help in attracting top notch players in the future if they saw us a club who sought to restrict their ability to play for their country.

.....but as they are not, all clubs should stand together on this and ban their players from going if they have to isolate upon return to England

In fairness, Klopp is like a broken record whining about everything that doesn't revolve around the needs of his paymasters, more subs, winter breaks, television schedules, the wind, refs, VAR. A lot of the players were bought after they became internationals, it can't be a surprise for him to see them selected. If he doesn't like quarantine requirements, that's unfortunate, but so be it.

Maybe the answer is if a team think its affected by quarantines they should get the option of postponing games till there players are available again.. Going to Brazil I would have though particularly dodgy

I voted "Yes", but not from a regular point of principal. More that at this moment of the pandemic and given the logistics around isolation on return, international fixtures do not make any sense to be happening.

Leeds have already lost Rodrigo for a couple of games as he had to self-isolate on his return to England from Spain earlier in the season

Are these fixtures friendlies or competitive internationals?

Tbh I barely take an interest in Engerland until the major tournaments.
