Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Monday 12th April) Start of a Dynasty - thanks to Dallas

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Monday 12th April, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Start of a Dynasty - thanks to Dallas

The ten men of Leeds United condemned Champions elect Manchester City to just their fourth defeat of the season, elevating themselves into the top half of the Premiership table for the first time since the beginning of the season. The last time Leeds completed such a feat was back in January 2001, when Bakke, Bowyer and a brace from Robbie Keane hammered the Blue side of Lancashire. Twenty years on, City's £924m squad were firm favourites to coast to victory, but it was not to be.

As expected Citeh showed early signs of dominance but it was the Whites that struck first with three minutes of the first half remaining. Alioski's long range clearance / pass found Costa on the left wing. The Angolan did well in controlling the ball, and evading two defenders before feeding Bamford. Leeds leading scorer was immediately closed down but found Dallas in space on the edge of the 18 yard box. The Northern Ireland International's rasping drive clipped the inside of the post leaving Moraes stranded.

Moments later, Leeds hopes of Victory took a crushing blow when Liam Cooper was sent off for a sliding challenge that took out Gabriel Jesus. The Leeds skipper was originally booked, only for VAR to send Andre Marriner to the sidelines to review his decision. Moments later, Cooper was sent for an early bath. As expected, Bamford was sacrificed in favour of Struijk on the stroke of half time.

City continued to press hard in the second half, but fine defending limited Guardiola to half chances until the final 15 minutes. Ferran Torres set up a tense finale after finally finding a way past a stubborn Leeds defence. Leeds continued to throw men behind the ball, and counter attack when possible whilst Pep's side laid siege on Meslier's goal. Leeds patience was rewarded in injury time when Alioski threaded an inch perfect through ball to Dallas. As thousands of Leeds fans held their breathe, he held off two defenders before slotting the ball between Moraes legs. What a great way for Dallas to celebrate his 30th Birthday later this week!

Bring it on Liverpool and Man U!

So Leeds can defend!

Not only did we see Leeds throw ten men behind the ball and counter attack successfully, but we also saw the Whites defend corners by man marking. In what can only be described as an extremely accomplished performance, it was not very Bielsa like! The Argentine admitted during his post match press conference that 'he had never trained his team to defend with ten men behind the ball!' - Why not?

Other teams have done it to us on many occasions!

Stelling - Daylight robbery

Jeff Stelling has issued a grovelling apology to Leeds fans over his reaction to Leeds winner. The Sky Sports presenter went into shock following Dallas' injury time winner at the Ehihad on Saturday lunchtime saying.

“Talk about smash and grab, talk about daylight robbery, it’s just happened in broad daylight at the Etihad.

It's fair to say Leeds fans are a little fickle when it comes to pundits taking a swipe at their club. Unsurprisingly, six hours later Stelling offered a grovelling apology to the Leeds faithful.

Daylight robbery was of course the wrong expression re Leeds, so apologies to their fans. I was just gobsmacked that they won it in that way – hence the scream! And Dallas – what finishes they were!

Morning EB et all

What an amazing game it was and we deserved the 3 points having to compete not only against the 11 World Class players on the pitch, did you see their bench  throw in a ref that had sporadic bouts of blindness but the eyes of an eagle if a Leeds player was within 2 foot of a Citee player and commentary that was so biased it was like watching the scum been commentated on my Fergie himself.

And even against those odds according to some "pundits" we are over hyped, lucky, a long ball team, championship level and obviously going to burn out soon, if we are going to survive in this league what we need is a Big Sam, Fwank or perhaps a Tony Pullis get us playing at a proper level   bunch of f**k wits

Jeff I can forgive, he comments with his heart on his sleeve and he was actually expressing his shock and surprise not having a dig at us

Bring on the Pool and the Scum Get IN Leeeeeeds

I mean we did have two shots on target all game, it was the definition of a smash and grab second half although first half I thought we more than matched them.

Absolutely fantastic win and for so.many reasons. We've been defensively frail a lot of the season and so to put in such a resilient performance defensively was great to see and the fitness and spirit of the team is great to watch. Very very very happy. Hope we can continue this great form until the end of the season

Have you listened to the LUTV commentary when Dallas scores the winner? It's brilliant. Tony Dorigo screams like a banshee.

Had a chat with Tony prior to an away game in the club shop last season, a quiet man but still very passionate about LUFC :)

I think/hope.MB was just being modest, it would be extremely surprising if we dont prepare for that scenario and indeed incredibly unlikely that the players would just do that off there own back.

David Ornstein said this.

, The Athletic understands that Bielsa has conducted several sessions and tutorials on how his team should play if they are at a numerical disadvantage. This is because his preferred style of play centres fundamentally on a man-to-man approach all over the field. As such, Leeds players were sufficiently well-briefed and prepared to cope and understand how they should play after Cooper was sent off.

In the dressing room at half-time, the coaching staff told their players how, rather than pressing the City centre-backs when they moved forward with the ball, Leeds players should mark the players who could receive possession from them. This had been discussed and coached at their Thorp Arch training ground during the week.

And thats exactly what happened tactically, no way the players decided to do that by themselves.

I like Jeff, no issue with what he said, it was a smash and grab and a bloody good one.

Besides Jeff likes us, listen to how he deals with this idiot.
Incidentally we spent arouns £96mil Mr Boyd.

£16mil of that was on Helder Costa who was already here on loan.

£5mil of it was on Illan Meslier who was also here on loan already.

£1mil was on Joe Gelhard who is an u23 player yet to play a minute of first team football.

So that brings it down to £74mil.

And then £27mil Rodrigo has played about 12 games worth of minutes.

Diego Llorente who cost about £18mil has played 8 games worth of minutes.

£13mil Robin Koch has played about 10 games worth of minutes.

So £55mil worth of our new signings have played about 30 games worth of minutes between them.

Even Costa has only played about 12 games worth of minutes.

So only £5mil Meslier and £17mil Raphinha have been regulars for us this season and Mes was here last season.

And incidentally we officially have the 17th cheapest squad in the league and are either 1st or 2nd for points per £ spent.

Do some research.
Signed

That's the trouble with these so called experts. They simply trot out a line that someone else has said without any research. Even spending £100m and if those players had all started every game the starting line-up would be less than the majority of premiership teams. It's hardly like the rest of the premiership teams spent no money. Fulham spent over £100 in 2018-2019 and got relegated, Villa spent £100m last season and survived by the skin of their teeth. Sheff Utd spent over £50m in the summer to add to whatever they had spent the season before

Stelling is ok not the worst commentator by a very long chalk. But by and large commentators and especially pundits are poor. Watching that clip it’s obvious that that Boyd chap didn’t have a clue what he was talking about, he’d plainly not done any research but just trotted out some rubbish he’d half heard somewhere and was surprised and utterly stumped when Stelling challenged him to explain - embarrassing or what. It was such a breath of fresh air to have Peter Drury and Ali McCoist doing the commentary last week when we played the Blunts.

I think Saturday was very Bielsa like. It was group of players without egos, many dismissed as not being able to make it at other clubs, many dismissed by Leeds own fans as not being Premier standard, running themselves into the ground to pursue a result against one of the most expensive squads ever assembled.

I don't expect Bielsa to study the ways of other clubs that stick 10 behind the ball and I want Leeds to remain the one team that against all the odds, financial, number of players on the pitch, are sending runners forward in the dying minutes searching for a goal...

Ali makes me laugh so has to be a decent pundit.

I see ITV have snapped up Graeme Souness for the Euros, another excellent analyser who also loves watching Bielsa's Leeds.

Just watched ‘The Analysis Show’. Showed how the reason we won that game was because in extra time playing with 10 men against the league’s best, we still had two players high and wide. Hosts basically said no other team in those circumstances would have been still set up to try and win the game when the opportunity presented.
Funny, they compared Leeds effort vs City with Chelsea’s effort when they were down to 10 men and scores level against WBA.😄
